Rules for Workplace Safety Management ? Small and Medium Business ...

At the time of safety management processing, there are some rules of human behavior that must be taken into consideration. These are simple but have great influence on human behavior. Those are repeating, consistency, involvement, positive reinforcement, and common sense.

a) Repeating: To keep every employees consciousness, employers should use repetition which will ensure that safety message. Safety management is not an event, it is a process. One of the ways to create this consciousness about safety is to hold five minute safety briefings at the beginning of each shift. If employer want to make safety briefings relevant, interesting and valuable, then he will find that workers will be ready to contribute.

b) Consistency: An organization always trust the people who are consistent. Consistency is demonstrated. For example, if, at a safety briefing, you mention that there will be no blame if an accident occurs, the statement has to be backed up by your behavior and the behavior of others in the event of an accident.

c) Involvement: Involvement is the key to safety management. The workers who are ideally situated to develop safe working practices are the people doing the job. In a workplace, all persons should involve in all workplace safety matters. It is a common responsibility for all the people who are involved in the project. All workers should follow the safe working practices. If any one does a mistake, it may effect everyone and the organization. So involvement in safety work practices are important to create safe environment at workplace.

d) Positive reinforcement: If you are serious about creating a safer workplace, make sure that you recognize safe behavior. It is main responsibility to find people who are working safely, every day and tell them that what they are doing as per noticed by employer or supervisors. Catch the workers doing it safely and they will continue to do it safely.

e) Common sense: It has been said that sense is not that common. This is relevant when considering workplace safety management. If the safety rules and regulations don?t pass the common sense of the people at risk, they will not comply. That?s why the involvement of the staff in safety management is so important.

By following all the above five rules one can create a very safe work environment.
