Newsweek cover imagines Diana at age 50 (AP)

NEW YORK ? The latest Newsweek cover contains a ghostly sight: a computer-generated image of a stylish Princess Diana, as she might look now, walking with Kate Middleton.

The article inside was written by Diana biographer and longtime provocateur Tina Brown. She's also Newsweek's editor-in-chief, having taken over after her online publication, the Daily Beast, merged late last year with the decades-old publication.

"What would she have been like?" Brown writes of Diana, who would have turned 50 on Friday, nearly 14 years after her death in a Paris car crash. "Still great-looking: that's a given."

The magazine's new issue also features an imagined Diana Facebook page and a slideshow comparing the fashion styles of Diana and Middleton, who married Diana's oldest child, Prince William, in April.

About the cover, a Los Angeles Times headline asked, "Shocking, brilliant or just plain cheap?" An Atlantic Wire headline added, "How Creepy Is Princess Diana's Ghost on the Cover of Newsweek?"

Brown's answer: Not at all.

"We wanted to bring the memory of Diana alive in a vivid image that transcends time and reflects my piece," she said in a statement Tuesday.

Arsenal's Boat Rocked | The Sports Mirror

Arsenal?s boat rocked

Arsenal?s boat rocked

It does seem to be a familiar sight this transfer season with regards to Arsenal. They finished the season having lost their steam midway and fans looked at their team and wondered what the addition of a couple of good players would do to the team. However Arsenal again looks as the team that shall see more ?high profile? exits than entries.

Arsenal has been considered a young team with great potential for ages now. However they also have developed the image of a ?selling club?. Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas have all voiced their discontent and could be on their way out of the club. Samir Nasri is wanted by Manchester United who are looking to splash the cash this summer in order to rebuild their team. His contract runs until 2012 and all negotiations regarding an extension seem to have broken down. Wenger has already come out and said that he would not be selling any of his players to domestic rivals Manchester United. However Arsenal seems to have gotten into a tough spot here. They could deny Nasri the transfer and risk losing him for nothing next year.

Gael Clichy is coveted by Liverpool as an answer to their troublesome left back position. Again the loss of a firmly established player to domestic rivals will be felt. However Arsenal have Kieran Gibbs as an able replacement and might be willing to cash in on Clichy. However some reports suggest that Arsenal might make a move for Newcastle?s unsettled Jose Enrique.

The story for Fabregas is vastly different. Since his rise at Arsenal we have been constantly been reminded of his Barca DNA by Xavi and Pique. Barcelona almost seems to believe that this would lower the asking price below the 40 million mark. Arsenal should drive the price up and sell Fabregas lest his stock dips further. They would be better off by getting Nasri to sign an extension with a significant increase in his wages. They could also use the money they get by Fabregas? transfer to buy two good midfielders especially a left sided midfielder.

Other transfer rumours regarding Arsenal:

In: Raphael Varane (Lens), Gervinho (Lille), Christopher Samba (Blackburn), Gary Cahill (Bolton)

Out: Andrei Arshavin (Zenit), Nicklas Bendter (Besiktas)

China dispatches patrol boat amid tensions (AP)

BEIJING ? China has dispatched one of its largest maritime patrol ships on a first-ever visit to the Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore amid a spike in tensions over disputed territory in the South China Sea.

The Haixun-31 left Wednesday and will stay in Singapore for two weeks of exchanges on search and rescue, anti-piracy and port management operations, Chinese state media reported Thursday.

Similar ships have been accused of harassing foreign shipping in the South China Sea, including U.S. Navy surveillance vessels.

China, Vietnam and the Philippines have traded diplomatic barbs recently over claims to the resource-rich South China Sea and its island groups. Vietnam's navy conducted live-firing exercises Monday after accusing Chinese boats of disrupting oil and gas exploration in its waters.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news conference Friday that the U.S. understood the Chinese ship was making a "routine, planned visit" to Singapore. She reiterated that the South China Sea disputes should be resolved through negotiations.

The 3,000-ton, helicopter-equipped Haixun-31 is one of two vessels of that size belonging to the Maritime Safety Administration, one of five nominally civilian agencies tasked with overseeing China's interests at sea. All of those departments are undergoing major expansions as Beijing moves to assert its territorial claims and economic interests in both the South China Sea and the East China Sea, where it has territorial disputes with Japan and Taiwan.

In coming years, three dozen vessels will be added to the fleet, an unnamed official with the State Oceanic Administration, another of the five agencies, announced last year. Defense experts say the People's Liberation Army Navy, which is also undergoing a thorough upgrade, has been gradually strengthening its command over the maritime patrol agencies, boosting their armaments and improving coordination.

Religions of the world, are directed at risk?

In today's society and in history, and religion was the main driver in people's thoughts, actions and intentions.

Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, have all the books that serve as guidelines for which they are used. The Bible, the Tao, the Bhagavad Gita, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, the Torah, the Koran, to name a few. Have a statement or concept is the same for everyone. Several variants, but the same meaning. "Do unto othersThey would have you do. "Unfortunately, this principle is sometimes lost in many applications and interpretations of these books.

Religion has played a major role in human history, to try to define it and the source is a difficult task. Every culture changes in response to the "how and why" of existence, but in reality they all have a common thread. If you take a step back and watch the practices and beliefs that all have the same basic things to say in myto see.

The basic principle is that there is a God or supreme being outside of us, creates and controls all things in our lives. This gives us the convenience of not taking responsibility for everything that happens and puts it out of us, where we have no control. With a set of rules to us through the sacred books, which we conduct our lives with the certainty that we go to "heaven" if we, if we can live with the rules followed by death.

"New Age" Faith sees things from a different perspective.Instead of following the election of leaders is to follow the car. A belief that we are with God, and have the power to create what we desire. As we experience life depends on us to choose, not mentioned in a book by a specific rule or force outside of us.

A controversial concept, to say the least, because it rooted in the norms of our society is. It is the next step in the transition of the human spirit to the leader to follow? Things to do, how they weredone in the past just because that's how they do it? Or is it a totally new perspective in order to follow up and take full responsibility for all the events in your life? We are going to examine our actions and questioning the reasons why we do things in a certain way?

If we really change the perspective of personal responsibility, that the doctrine and the dogma of religion in danger's way of the dinosaurs. There are signs of decline in the popularity ofaccording to the strict rules of world religions? I see it. In Europe, religion has always been an important part of everyday life from the statistics of the number of visitors declined. Rejected by a generation of people who question the validity and authority of the Church.

I think the key to the survival of religion is a complete revision of doctrine. The main change from the amount of tolerance for other religions show. Understandingthat there may be different versions of "truth" and everyone is respected and recognized as valid. Undiscounted be persecuted or their differences, as happened in history.

In addition, a change in the use of fear that religions practiced as a mechanism of "control" for the people. The fear is that if they do not adopt the rule book it serious consequences for them in their lives. Religion has and uses this tactic to their "flock" to keep asking in turn, them to give their personal power with God and everything will be good for them.

And finally, a change in the way of our relationship religions describe God, that we think lowly servants or unable to create for ourselves. I think if you are really listening to the teachings of Jesus, as he describes how he and she is all the same attributes, but this is a topic for another time. There is room for all these changes in religion, without which the essenceReason they were created in the first place.

We can all pray together? We can learn not only tolerate, but celebrate the differences that each religion has? I think so. And I also believe that if there are no changes, then the religions of the world destined to follow the path that leads to extinction.

Turkey arrests Anonymous members

Turkish protestors, APPlans for national net filters in Turkey have led to demonstrations.

Turkish police have arrested 32 people believed to be members of hacker collective Anonymous.

The group has been active in Turkey protesting against government plans to set up a national net filtering system.

Action against the group was started following a complaint from the Turkish directorate of telecommunications whose website was hit by Anonymous.

The arrests follow similar action by police in Spain who detained three members of the hacker group.

On 22 August, Turkey is planning to turn on a system that demands people sign up for one of four filtering packages designed for different types of users.

The Turkish government claims this system is needed to protect younger web users from net-borne dangers. Critics, including Anonymous, say the filtering system will be used to monitor web activity and suppress dissent.

Many Turkish people have mounted street demonstrations to protest against the introduction of the filters.

On 10 June, Anonymous took action in support of these protests by knocking several Turkish government websites offline. It used an attack tool known as the Low Orbit Ion Cannon (Loic) which bombards targets with so much data that they become overwhelmed.

The arrests came only days after the attacks were mounted and Turkish police may have exploited failings with Loic that allow users of it to be traced. Arrests were made in 12 cities around Turkey and eight of those detained are believed to be minors.

On 10 June, the Spanish national police announced that it had arrested three people believed to be members of Anonymous. In retaliation, Anonymous took the national police service site offline for a few hours.

Flixster study shows increase in mobile - Mobile Commerce Daily ...

A shot of the Flixster app

Mobile is rapidly energizing as the go-to device for purchases with 62 percent of consumers?turning to their smartphone at the beginning of the?buying process, per a study?by Lightspeed Research.

The data, sponsored by Flixster,?shows?that smartphone users use mobile devices for 35 percent of their research when buying big-ticket items. The study also found that consumer mobile device habits differ greatly during the work week and weekend, with more than two-thirds of smartphone owners using apps and the Internet for planning weekend activities between Thursdays to Sundays each week.

?The study proves that mobile devices are quickly replacing personal computers,? said James Smith, chief revenue officer of Flixster, San Francisco.

?These numbers show that people are using mobile devices to plan everyday activities today, not two years from now,? he said.

Additionally, the research found that the top uses for?consumers on weekends were research, product price comparisons and product reviews. In comparison, news and business apps rank high for smartphone users from Mondays to Thursdays.

The study also?shows that smartphone users are using their mobile devices for shopping for?everyday items.

Flixster?is an online movie destination with film reviews, trailers and databases.

Lightspeed Research?is an online market research firm.

Flick phone
The study found that not only are users interacting with different apps and tools during the weekend compared to the work week, they are?also using them in a way that integrates with their lifestyle.

The research found that when going to a movie, 58 percent of people surveyed use their smartphones to research nearby restaurants and 36 percent of people research shopping spaces.

?Our study found that people were combining apps and used several tools together to do one activity, such as going to the movies,? Mr. Smith said.

?By using smartphones to buy movie tickets, shopping and finding a restaurant, it shows that users behavior is very natural,? he said.

?The majority of people we surveyed viewed their smartphones as the primary tool for planning weekend activities.?

Rest in PC
The research is proof of a larger trend within mobile marketing ? smartphones are slowly making desktop computers obsolete.

In the study, four out of ten people said they prefer their mobile devices to coordinate with their friends via social networking.

In addition, the study found?that users interact with different apps based on the day of the week. This?is proof that companies need to start thinking differently about mobile devices.

?Sixty-eight percent of the people said that they view digital apps as a primary avenue for shopping,? Mr. Smith said.

?Because of this, companies need to think of how their apps can interact with consumers during both the weekend and work week,? he said.

?During the weekend, consumers use their smartphones as the universal tool for planning activities, so companies need to think how their apps can work with other apps and not just as a single location for consumers.?

Final Take

[IDC Report] Windows Phone to overtake Apple?s iOS by 2015

According to Analyst company IDC, Microsoft?s partnership with Nokia could lead to Windows Phone moving ahead of competitor mobile operating systems, like iOS and Blackberry in about 3 years.

According to their research, Windows Phone 7 will struggle until Nokia?s devices come in. IDC analyst Ramon Llamas stated in the press release:

?Until Nokia begins introducing Windows Phone-powered smartphones in large volumes in 2012, Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile will only capture a small share of the market, as the release of Mango-powered smartphones are not expected to reach the market until late 2011.?

The firm expects the partnership to have about 20 percent of the smartphone market by 2015, which means it will have a larger market share then iOS, which is expected to have a 16.9 percent share with Blackberry having 13.4 percent. Android is still expected to be the market leader, with 43.8 Percent.

I sure hope they?re right about this. Windows Phone will do better, for sure, but this figure seems a little? optimistic? What do you think?

I can almost always count on a good old Harlequin novel to take me on an emotional rollercoaster ride from which I wouldn?t want to get off. Penny Jordan is a favorite Harlequin author of mine and I am sure many fans of the Harlequin line are bound to feel the same. Though I have done most of my Harlequin crazed phase of reading prior to the start of my review site, this is one novel by Penny Jordan that I seemed to have missed, a fact I am glad that I have rectified when I started on this one on a whim today.

22 year old Poppy Carlton has had her dreams crushed when her cousin Chris Carlton who has been the man of her dreams since she had turned 12 years of age marries another. Forced to grow up and get her head out of the clouds, Poppy is horrified when her virginal body responds in an appalling manner to James Carlton?s caresses. James is her beloved Chris?s elder brother, the forbidding and formidable version to the sunny and easy going nature of Chris who occupies her thoughts night and day ? or so Poppy tries telling herself.

8 years older than Poppy, James is a man who keeps his emotions close to himself apart from tearing into Poppy?s infatuation when it comes to his younger brother. When consequences of their nights of passion together forces Poppy to acknowledge her feelings towards the brother who is a match for her in everyway, Poppy fears that she might be just a little bit too late in accepting that James is the one and only for her.

I love stories where the hero has always being in love with the heroine but somehow was overshadowed by the heroine?s infatuation with another man presumably a relative of the hero?s. James is a mouthwateringly alluring hero and Poppy though at first grated on my nerves with her self pitying nature made up for it beautifully when she freely expresses her need for James bringing the poor guy to his knees.

And this one certainly managed to be an emotion wrenching read and I loved the effect the story had on my emotions as I read along. Though this might not be a feminist?s idea of how a romance should be, this is romance in its most old-fashioned form, the reason why I fell in love with the world of romance in the first place. Recommended for fans of the Harlequin genre and fans of Penny Jordan.

"The Man in the Rockefeller Suit": The great impostor

Rich people don't Google: That's one of the curious things to be gleaned from Mark Seal's frivolous but highly diverting true-crime saga, "The Man in the Rockefeller Suit." It tells the story of Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, the son of a house painter from a small town in Bavaria, who spent 30 years living under a series of false identities in the United States. For more than half that period, Gerhartsreiter successfully passed himself off as one of the lesser members of the Rockefeller clan. Under the name Clark Rockefeller, he married a highly paid consultant and Harvard Business School graduate with whom he fathered a child. He might still be "Clark Rockefeller" today if his 12-year marriage hadn't fallen apart, leading him to kidnap his daughter and set off an international manhunt.

Seal originally covered the Clark Rockefeller case for Vanity Fair magazine, and it's a classic VF story, the sort of society crime yarn that beguiles countless travelers through the first leg of a cross-country flight. In his early 20s, Gerhartsreiter bluffed his way into this country and began honing his impostor skills on the widows and matrons of San Marino, a high-end Southern California suburb. San Marino's new-money elite were dazzled by his calling cards -- "Christopher Chichester, XIII, Bt." (the "Bt" was for "baronet") -- and by a wardrobe featuring "a navy blue blazer with a crest on it, not a family crest, but just a crest the manufacturer of blazers had put on the pocket," as one of the sources in this exhaustively researched account told Seal.

Gerhartsreiter's rise was the product of audacity, intelligence and charm (his) combined with gullibility and status-seeking (his marks). It's impossible not to marvel over what the German kid got away with -- like telling the San Marinans that he owned an English cathedral he wanted to import to their town or convincing them that he had produced "The Prisoner" (a famous British TV series that first aired when he was 7 years old).

When Gerhartsreiter's San Marino setup went south (we'll get to that later), he hightailed it to Greenwich, Conn., with its stately colonial homes and fabled yacht club. He called himself Christopher Crowe and claimed he'd directed the revival of the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV series. (Another Christopher Crowe, the real one, did work on this and several other film and television projects, and the appearance of his name in credit sequences won over many of Gerhartsreiter's dupes.) Incredibly, in 1987 he was even hired to run the American corporate bond department of a Japanese securities firm, managing five employees and making more than $100,000 per year despite the fact that he was under 30 and had absolutely no experience or educational credentials. (That didn't last long; Gerhartsreiter was fired when somebody noticed that "Nothing was being done -- there was no trading going on whatsoever.")

San Marino finally began to catch up with him, so Gerhartsreiter went to ground for four years. When he finally resurfaced, he was calling himself Clark Rockefeller and insinuating his way into the echelons of Manhattan's Upper East Side. After marrying Sandra Boss, a woman nearly as mystifying as Gerhartsreiter, he eventually graduated to the big time, buying a house in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood, where he managed to deceive several people who had known actual Rockefellers into thinking that he was one, too.

How did Gerhartsreiter do it? Haute WASP Episcopalian churches turn out to have been a key element in his campaigns. He'd attend after-service coffee hours and scent out the easily snowed. Once he'd befriended a couple of people, he parlayed those connections into further friendships and eventually into memberships in private clubs where the staff could be counted on to greet him by his assumed name. Soon everyone believed he was a Rockefeller because everyone else they knew believed it, too. A good Web search might have proven otherwise, but the people Gerhartsreiter hobnobbed with seem to have been fairly backward in that department. One of his Boston friends was impressed when he loaned Gerhartsreiter a recording and the impostor "put it into digital form and returned the CD."

Gerhartsreiter's "marriage" (it would later turn out that the service, held in a Quaker church, had no legal standing) to Sandra Boss was a scam of another order. With his radar for the vulnerable and credulous, Gerhartsreiter selected a bride who was sufficiently competent and driven to bring home the money he needed to support a facade of inherited wealth, but also insecure enough in her private life to allow him to bully her into near-complete submission. At one point, Boss was pulling in a $2 million salary while enduring insufficient heating and food in the couple's ramshackle manse in rural New Hampshire.

Boss was also terrified -- correctly, it turned out -- that if her marriage split up, her manifestly ingenious husband would find a way to kidnap her daughter. He was "dangerous," she insisted, and this also turned out to be correct: Earlier this year, Gerhartsreiter, who is already serving time for kidnapping his child, was charged with murdering his San Marino landlady's son and daughter-in-law back in the 1980s.

Only one of the law-enforcement officials Seal interviews makes the obvious point that Gerhartsreiter succeeded the way all con men do: by tricking people into believing what they already want to believe to begin with. True, he had the trappings down cold, from the lock-jawed diction of Eastern-seaboard privilege (familiar to everyone from the voice of Thurston Howell III of "Gilligan's Island" -- in fact, that's probably where Gerhartsreiter learned it) to the preppy uniform, including Topsiders worn without socks. And somewhere along the line, he had even acquired a collection of forged paintings -- good enough, apparently, to convince many experts and providing further evidence that he came from a family famous for collecting art.

Still, there were a few people who suspected him of being a phony, so the performance wasn't bulletproof. Gerhartsreiter's primary marks were thrilled to be buddies with a Rockefeller, to know someone who'd worked in the movie business, or for the CIA, or designing cutting-edge weaponry (all stories Gerhartsreiter told). His odd behavior -- his phobias about Connecticut and hotels, his refusal to eat anything but white foods, and above all his stinginess -- were written off as a rich man's eccentricities. He is clearly a phenomenally quick study and possessed of encyclopedic knowledge on numerous subjects (mostly gleaned from books), but doubts must have arisen all the same. They were promptly papered over by desire.

Besotted with wealth and prestige, Gerhartsreiter may be weird, but he isn't hard to understand. Who better to fathom his motives than the average Vanity Fair reader, those avid devourers of socialite scandals and celebrity gossip? Both have pressed their noses against the window of privilege, but only Gerhartsreiter squandered a lifetime and an impressive array of talents to get inside.

Early Exposure to Pets Won't Up Kids' Allergy Risk: Study - Drugs ...

MONDAY, June 13 -- Exposure to pets in infancy and childhood probably won't increase a child's risk of developing an allergy to cats and dogs, and may actually protect against such allergies, new research suggests.

The first year of life appears to offer the greatest protection, the researchers said. Living with a dog before age 1 year was associated with about half the risk of developing a dog allergy in boys. Exposure to cats before turning 1 was associated with about a 48 percent reduction in risk for girls and boys, the new study reported.

"Exposing children to cats and dogs in the home is not going to increase the risk of sensitization to these animals. It might even decrease the risk," said the study's lead author, Ganesa Wegienka, an epidemiologist in the department of public health at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Results of the study are published online June 13 in the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy.

As many as 70 percent of U.S. households have pets, according to estimates from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. For those who are allergic to these animals, symptoms can range from watery eyes, a runny nose and sneezing to a full-blown asthma attack.

But experts haven't been sure if early exposure to animals might contribute to the development of those allergies. Some experts think that early exposure could trigger the development of allergies, while others suspect that early exposure could increase the immune system's exposure to a diverse array of bacteria, making it less likely to overreact to normally harmless substances, such as animal dander. This theory is commonly referred to as the hygiene hypothesis.

To see what effect, if any, childhood exposure to cats and dogs has on the development of pet allergies in children, the researchers tested blood samples gathered as part of the Detroit Childhood Allergy Study for the presence of a substance known as animal-specific IgE. The presence of this antibody would indicate that an individual was "sensitized" to that animal, which indicates an allergy. The study began in 1987.

At age 18, about 560 of the study's participants agreed to participate in this follow-up study. They provided additional blood samples and pet histories.

During their first year of life, 184 teens had an indoor dog and 110 had an indoor cat.

In males, the risk of having a dog allergy was decreased by 50 percent in those who had a dog during their first year. This association wasn't found in females, however. But when the researchers looked at teens born via cesarean-section delivery, they found that both males and females had a 67 percent decreased risk of dog allergy when they lived with a dog during their first year of life.

Wegienka noted that babies born via C-section aren't exposed to the diverse microflora that babies born vaginally are, which might make their immune systems more susceptible to allergies.

The researchers said that exposure to animals at other times in childhood didn't appear to be as significant as the first year. But, Wegienka cautioned that this study doesn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship between having a pet and avoiding allergies, just an association between those two factors.

"We don't want to say that everyone should go out and get a dog or cat to prevent allergies," she said, adding that the current study only found an association between a reduced risk and exposure to cats and dogs. "More research is needed, though we think this is a worthwhile avenue to pursue. How does having a dog or a cat change the home environment? And, how does that affect allergy risk?"

The authors said it would be logical to look at smaller and smaller windows of time, such as the first month or first three months of life.

Dr. Jennifer Appleyard, chief of allergy and immunology at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, said the development of allergies is very complicated. It's significant that this study found that early life exposure wasn't associated with an increased risk, she said.

"We're not likely to find one simple answer to avoid them [allergies], but this study suggests that maybe having pets -- whether or not it's protective -- maybe having them isn't so bad," Appleyard said.

The Neuroscience of Romanticized Love ? Part 2: Either-Or Thinking ...

The selling of ideals for romantic love is a multibillion-dollar industry. While these notions contain elements of authentic love, they largely consist of myths, social order politics, and certain either-or thinking patterns known to jam the brain and body?s communication network.

Why the paralyzing effect?

Simply put, this thinking has attributes of belief systems known to jam the reflective thinking processes of the human brain with ? fear.?Only fear can paralyze the otherwise remarkable abilities of the human brain to reflectively think, learn, understand, empathize, thus, help partners form vibrant, mutually enriching couple relationships.

At best,?romanticized ideals, a phenomenon peculiar to the West, form a system of unrealistic expectations that lead single and married partners alike ? to look for love where it cannot be found.

The role of language and the ?power of the pen??

In romanticized love, this system of either-or thinking tells men and women that they are from different planets, with different purposes, yearnings and emotions, and even worse, that their self-worth depends on how closely they conform to these standards.

In essence, for centuries philosophy, religion, and other political institutions have worked together, wittingly or unwittingly, to interpret physical differences between men and women into laws that legalized ideals for dominance, might makes right, survival of the fittest, and hierarchical values in general.

With hierarchical values in mind, the power of the pen, and the use of language accordingly, have played powerful roles in crafting ?masculine? and ?feminine? ideals. Overall, we?ve been culturally conditioned at home, school, work, etc., to use these either-or ?shoulds? and dichotomous labels to judge ourselves, our partner, and men and women in general, for example, as either:

  • Rational or irrational
  • Powerful or powerless
  • Strong or weak
  • Emotional or emotionally detached
  • Dependent or independent
  • Deserving or undeserving
  • Perfect or flawed
  • Loved or unloved

It?s limiting to define what emotional states men and women ?should? express. In truth, all of these attributes are normal to human experience. Such labels have the power, however, to effectively turn male and female relations into a competition for dominance.

Men are particularly tuned into hierarchically positioning, as they have been taught (warned) from boyhood that their self-worth as men (human beings) depends on ?proof? of dominance and ?power over? women (and children, weak men, etc.). Recent studies, for example, found?bullying behaviors between males are socially approved strategies in which males establish dominance.

Beliefs are life shaping.

It may seem as if persons or events around us cause the upsetting feelings we feel, however, events are only the triggers. Our response depends on our perceptions ? our core beliefs ??what we tell ourselves about events we experience.

Our?subconscious mind, the part that runs the body, depends on them to know how to ?interpret? events. When partners interact, for example, their subconscious minds check on their beliefs to determine what overall emotional state to activate when interpreting what they say or do (sensory data) ? and there are to primary options, either the brain?s ?learning mode? (state of safety and love) or ?protective? mode (state of fear).

What we believe about an event tells our brain?s operating system, the subconscious mind, how to handle it, more specifically, whether to remain in a ?learning? mode (parasympathetic nervous system) or to activate the body?s ?protective? mode (sympathetic nervous system), also called the ?fight or flee? response.

Examples of these either-or beliefs?

No matter how you slice it, a value system that emphasizes hierarchy imposes a worldview in which human relationships are experienced in terms of positional stances of either: top-dog or under-dog.

These romanticized ideals:

  • Emphasize obedience to authority and win-lose competitions.
  • Define power in ?zero-sum? and ?power-over? terms.
  • Associate the ability to exert ?power over? with status, strength, men, authority.
  • View battles,?differences and power imbalances between men and women as inevitable.
  • Define ?listening to? or ?respecting? the other as ?doing what told,? in short, obedience.
  • Teach that love, self-worth, acceptance, respect are earned based on performance.
  • Judge performance on the basis of conformity to external expectations or standards.
  • View mistakes as defects, failures or willful disrespect or disobedience.
  • Control behavior with external rewards and punishments.
  • Legitimize use of physical violence, force and/or emotional manipulation tactics (fear, shame, guilt).
  • Teach us to judge self and others by making comparisons.
  • Associate emotions of vulnerability with weakness, emotionality, women, children, etc.
  • Associate emotions of anger with strength, power to make things happen, men, authority, status.
  • Relegate emotions of caring, nurturance, love, affection, etc., to secondary status.

We use these standards, subconsciously for the most part, to continuously judge (shame) ourselves (i.e., self-talk), or those around us, as either deserving or undeserving of love. Regardless whether those victimized are young or old, male or female, at home or work, it is a belief system that underlies both what is now socially condemned as?bullying on the one hand, yet, on the other hand, has been a culturally endorsed ?might makes right? value system in the West for ages.

In contrast, partnership values define ?power? as a choice. Power is as power does, and power can be a conscious choice to enrich life, work cooperatively together, empower the best in life and one another. When men and women are free to respond in caring ways that release oxytocin into their bloodstream, they feel ?safe? with one another, thus, safe enough to give and receive love.

Why the relationship between men and women matters?

According to Riane Eisler?s seminal work, The Chalice and the Blade, how a society structures relations between men and women is a critical component that forms the basis for all aspects of society, family, school, church, government, politics and so on.

Hierarchical values are associated with either-or thinking patterns, not unlike group-think or thought control methods, in that they:

  • Impose contradictory demands on the brain that can ? and do ? cause men and women to relate to one another, without their conscious awareness, primarily out of fear.
  • Activate the brain?s ?fight or flee? system during problem solving ? thus, when they most need their reflective thinking skills, they are not available;?they react defensively instead.
  • Interfere with the formation of emotional intimacy in the couple relationship, as well as each partner?s personal growth and well-being.
  • Train the brain to adopt limiting thinking patterns that require men and women, in different ways, to shut down their awareness of what they each emotionally need, and have the power to realize, as human beings, and that is ? to meaningfully connect and feel valued in relation to one another.

Noting the brain is a relationship organ, these beliefs about what it means to be a ?real? man and a ?good? woman in a committed love relationship are what keep the brain in survival mode and block partners from fulfilling key strivings in life.

Romanticized ideals leave men and women at cross-purposes, holding onto static images of themselves and one another. For example:

  • Once the ?in love? phase ends and the ?power struggle? phase starts, partners start to form ?enemy? images of one another in their heads, each blaming the other for their own unfulfilled expectations.
  • Whether they express disappointments openly or silently, their thinking forms inner pools of resentment.
  • Each is unaware that their suffering and addictive relating patterns are largely, if not solely, a result of the limiting beliefs they hold.
  • To cope, they stay in comfort zones entirely of their own making ? and when they try to achieve their goals, these negative images and pre-conditioned comfort zones always block their well-intended efforts.
  • These limiting images, thoughts and beliefs make life seem like an ordeal; meanwhile, the futile attempts they use to get the love and relationship they want are about as effective as taking a shower wearing a raincoat.

Defensive strategies are effective in dealing with real threats and crises. By design, they help to distance us from a perceived threat.

In relational contexts, however, they are most often problematic. When partners are on the defensive during conflict, they automatically, at subconscious levels, view one another?s ideas, thoughts, perspectives, actions, etc., as ?threats.? As a result, they use words and nonverbal gestures that instill their partner with fear, shame and guilt ? all the while hoping to get a response of love and recognition in return!

What are the chances, however, that their tactics of fear, shame or guilt will succeed in getting the love they want? Zero to null.

In contrast successful couples, on the other hand, continually breakthrough barriers to consciously get comfortable with the uncomfortable, manage their fears, not by using tactics of force or emotional manipulation, but by replacing fear-based beliefs and images they have of themselves, one another, and their relationship with life-enriching ones. ?It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent,? Charles Dawin pointed out, ?but the one most responsive to change.?

What makes either-or thinking harmful?

Safe to say, an either-or view of love relationships hits the brain?s circuitry like a ton of bricks. This thinking pattern forms a black-and-white worldview of men, women, and their relationships, that is replete with fear-inducing ?shoulds? of what ?has to? happen ? or else.

Unquestionably, as human beings, we are well designed to handle stress. It is a matter of understanding when either-or thinking is useful to us and when it is not.

For example:

  • Either-or thinking is useful to us in crisis situations, such as seeing a snake on our path or waking up on a work day to find our alarm clock didn?t ring.
  • The hormones released in crisis situations, such as the stress hormone cortisol or adrenaline, help us deal more effectively with the situation at hand; in this case, we can avoid a snake bite or the risk of losing a job.
  • Our body is not designed to live in constant fear or alert mode, however; the sympathetic nervous system does not have time to make repairs and restore balance in the energies of the body.
  • As a result, overtime the stress of this type of thinking on the body wears down its systems and can cause illness.

When a snake startles us, either-or thinking associated with the body?s ?fight or flee? response works best to ensure our safety. In cases where we feel anxious about taking an exam, or discussing a sensitive issue with our partner, however,?low levels of fear and anxiety optimize our performance. We just need to know how to regulate our fear response, in other words, how to calm our mind and body in challenging situations, to prevent the activation of its fight or flee? system.

While hierarchy may work in military structures for the purpose of defense, in human brain and body terms, either-or thinking keeps the brain?s ?fight or flee? system on alert, thus, it promotes unhealthy conditions for the physical body as well as for an intimate relationship. Studies show?bullying produces chronic stress, elevations in the body?s cortisol response, and lifelong physical and physiological effects.

It?s simply not how the brain, ?a relationship organ? based on the latest neuroscience findings, is designed to work.

Humans are paradoxical both-and beings.

Life and relationship issues cannot be solved by either-or thinking.?As paradoxical beings, we are both-and rather than either-or.

  • We yearn to be recognized as unique individuals, yet we also yearn for shared connection.
  • We aspire to meaningfully contribute, yet our hearts are warmed when someone gives us a helping hand.
  • We are insatiably curious, wanting to learn all about the world around us, yet our most essential connection to understanding our self and world is within ? life is an inside job.

Equally important, we depend on both-and reflective thinking processes to inform our understanding of life and relationships.

  • Either-or thinking, when it comes to solving relationship issues, shuts down our ?brain?s amazing capacity for both-and possibility thinking.
  • For example, it is limiting to think of our self as either dependent nor independent, and rather healthier to find balance in experiencing (and developing) both in relation to others.

Hierarchical relationships, by definition, are a defense against emotional intimacy. In partnership relationships, power is a choice to empower emotionally healthy intimate relationships.

  • Power is a multi-dimensional concept.
  • Ultimately, it is a choice in how we relate to self and others that can produce dramatically different outcomes.
  • For example, what is power in one situation, i.e., lifting heavy objects, is not power in another, i.e., facing a fear of rejection or loss of self.

Life is about finding balance, not unlike walking a tightrope, a process that grows us personally and relationally.?We are strongest when we find balance in connecting to both our capacity for strength and resiliency yet also our ability to?empathically feel our emotions of vulnerability without reacting defensively.

If you find yourself replaying old scripts in your life or love relationship, or repeating the same lines and the same outcome of not getting what you want, there is hope. Thanks to the plasticity of your brain, it?s never too late to learn how to break free of this downward spiral thinking.

In relationship contexts, either-or thinking supports a hierarchical value system that keeps the brain in survival mode, promotes unhealthy conditions for the body and blocks the formation of emotional bonding in intimate relationships.

The answers to questions of what it means to be a man or a woman, what it means to be emotionally or sexually intimate should not imprison partners in the confines of their minds with addictive relating and love addiction patterns ? and rather personally free partners and both sexes to relate in humanizing ways.

SPDC declares force majeure on Nigeria?s Bonny oil

LAGOS? -? Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) has declared force majeure on Bonny Light loadings for June and July 2011. The declaration is as a result of production cutbacks caused by leaks and fires which occurred last week on the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP).

Joint Investigation visits comprising government agencies, communities and SPDC found that the incidents were caused by hacksaw cuts which indicate third party interference and activities of unknown persons.

The leaks have been repaired leading to resumption of production at the weekend. The TNP which transports production from SPDC and third parties in its Eastern operations to Bonny Terminal, was affected by leaks and five separate fire incidents on both the 24? and 28? lines in Bodo, Bera, Biera and Mogho all in Ogoni land, on June 9.

SPDC immediately shut the lines, mobilised its pipelines response and fire fighting teams and extinguished the fires by June 11.

Contacted, Shell Nigeria?s Media Manager, Mr Tony Okonedo, declined comments on affected volume, noting that the important point to note is that the fires had been put out, no lives were lost and normalcy restored. He admitted that the fires and leaks were caused by sabotage.

Comments are moderated. Please keep them clean and brief.

Updated: Windows 8 tablets: what you need to know

Fav Tag:

CNETAnalysis: Microsoft?s been pushing tablet computers for the best part of a decade, so you can imagine how happy the iPad?s success makes them. But Microsoft doesn?t give up easily, and Windows 8 tablets will emerge. So what?s Steve Ballmer going to be shouting about when he shows them off? Windows 8 tablets will have a new touch interface As we saw from the recent Windows 8 preview , Windows 8 tablets will have a marvellous new interface that looks rather like Windows Phone 7. ?Fast, fluid and dynamic, the experience has been transformed while keeping the power, flexibility and connectivity of Windows intact,? says Microsoft?s head of Windows Experience Julie Larson-Green. ?Although the new user interface is designed and optimized for touch, it works equally well with a mouse and keyboard. Our approach means no compromises ? you get to use whatever kind of device you prefer, with peripherals you choose, to run the apps you love. This is sure to inspire a new generation of hardware and software development, improving the experience for PC users around the world.? Windows 8 tablets? release date In December 2011, the New York Times wrote that Microsoft would unveil tablets running Windows 8 at CES 2011 in January , which proved to be incorrect. The NYT credited an unnamed source for the leak, which suggests that Microsoft?s keynote will be enlivened by the arrival of the next generation of Windows, as well as Samsung and Dell tablets. As it turned out, no Windows 8 tablets were shown at the show. However, the Windows 8 release date may be sooner than you think. Speculation is rife that a Windows 8 beta will surface at PDC , a developer conference being held by Microsoft in September 2011. The dates for the conference were announced by Microsoft at its MIX event on 12 April 2011. That means Windows 8 tablets could be out by early 2012 ? after CES 201! 2. Accor ding to Bloomberg there will be no Windows for tablets until 2012. As we reported on 4 March 2011 , sources told Bloomberg that a tablet-friendly version of Windows will be tested at the end of this year and not released until the summer of 2012. Microsoft may launch its own Windows 8 tablet New rumours suggest that Microsoft is working on an own-brand tablet to launch running Windows 8 . The speculation comes from Taipei, with sources claiming that the tablet will make use of a Texas Instruments chip and will launch by the end of 2012. Digitimes, which first published the rumour, claims its sources say that Microsoft is also looking to launch a tablet brand, as it did in gaming with the Xbox. Windows 8 tablets manufacturers It?s no surprise to see the names Dell and Samsung in the NYT piece: both firms have close relationships with Microsoft, although it?s interesting to see Microsoft getting groovy with an Android tablet manufacturer. We?d expect to see something like the leaked ? Lap PC ? from HP too. UPDATE: On 9 May 2011, we reported on a rumour of a forthcoming Nokia Windows 8 tablet . The info comes from phone commentator Eldar Murtazin, who wrote on the Mobile Review forum that Nokia will launch a tablet in 2012, possibly pushed back to 2013. Windows 8 tablets will probably look like iPads While Dell makes some unusually shaped tablets already, the Samsung tablet is ?similar in size and shape to the Apple iPad, although it is not as thin.? Unlike the iPad, ?it also includes a unique and slick keyboard that slides out from below for easy typing.? Windows 8 tablets will be designed for business use ?The company believes there is a huge market for business people who want to enjoy a slate for reading newspapers and magazines and then work on Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint while doing work,? the NYT says, quoting the inevitable ?person familiar with the company?s tablet plans?. Windows 8 tablets will have apps an! d an app store Apps are a big part of Windows 8 , with Microsoft convinced that ?app development will move to the web? and building a Windows Store with manufacturer-specific entrances. Again, we saw a lot more detail on this from the Windows 8 preview . Windows 8 tablet specifications aren?t strange or startling We?d expect Windows 8 tablets to have similar specifications to other iPad rivals such as the Galaxy Tab or BlackBerry Playbook , essentially netbooks in a different form factor: a gigahertz processor, a gigabyte of RAM, 802.11b/g/n wireless and multitouch capacitive displays. Expect lots of connectivity too, with USB ports a key selling point. Windows 8 tablets will run on ARM, Intel and AMD chips On 18 May 2011, Intel confirmed that there will be separate editions of Windows 8 that run on ARM processors as well as standard x86 processors from Intel and AMD ? all companies involved are serious about tablets, though ARM has stolen a lead; all major tablets on the market are ARM-based. The x86 versions of Windows 8 will feature a Windows 7 compatibility mode, while ARM versions won?t. Windows 8 tablet prices should be similar to Android ones Windows 8 tablets will be up against iPads, Android tablets and Chrome OS netbooks, so if they?re not priced very aggressively they?re going to be a tough sell. Richmond family loses home in fire

A Richmond family is without a home today after a fire tore through it last night. Family members say in the middle of the commotion they couldn't find each other and they feared the worst.

"I thought my dad was in there and I thought he was burning up," says Jacob Callahan.

Jacob was at a neighbor's house when the fire erupted around midnight last night. His first thought was that his dad, Jeff, was in danger.

"I was trying to go in there, but some people were trying to stop me," says Jacob.

Lucinda Lewis lives nearby and describes the horrific scene as she tried to comfort Jacob.

"It just went up in flames like it just exploded. He kept saying 'My daddy, my daddy!' I just told him 'It's OK, baby'," says Lewis.

Jacob got word that his father was at another neighbor's home and ran to tell him what was happening. He says he felt a huge relief when he found his dad safe and sound.

"I went up there and hugged him. I thought he was dead. It was alright after I knew my dad was fine. That's all I care about, really," says Jacob.

Jeff Callahan says when his son told him the news, there wasn't much he could do.

"I just sat back and watched it. Sat around and tried to hide my tears. I didn't want people seeing it, but I guess anybody else would too," he says.

Jeff Callahan says his family will be put up in a hotel for the next few days. Fire investigators haven't said what caused the fire.

Exploded Star's Guts Shining Bright Again, Photo Shows (SPACE.com)

The glowing entrails of an exploding star, thought to have faded over time, now appear to be lighting up again, a new Hubble Space Telescope photo reveals.

NASA released the new Hubble image of the well-known star explosion, called Supernova 1987A, today (June 10). The photo shows the closest supernova explosion witnessed in almost 400 years. This has allowed astronomers to study it in unprecedented detail as the outburst evolves.

In the latest study of Supernova 1987A a team of astronomers announced that the debris from the explosion that had faded over the years is brightening. This suggests that the star explosion, which is located 165,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud (a close neighbor of our own Milky Way galaxy), ?is turning into a so-called supernova remnant. The research is detailed in the June 9 edition of the journal Nature.

Supernovas typically transition into remnants when the exploded material starts to fade, but the brightness increases due to interactions between the debris cloud and surrounding gas. This cosmic shift is usually difficult for astronomers to study, but due to the relatively close proximity of the Large Magellanic Cloud, astronomers have been able to make detailed observations of Supernova 1987A periodically from 1994 to 2009.

"Supernova 1987A has become the youngest supernova remnant visible to us," said Robert Kirshner of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. "It's only possible to see this brightening because SN 1987A is so close and Hubble has such sharp vision."

Kirshner leads a long-term study of SN 1987A using the Hubble Space Telescope. Since its launch in 1990, Hubble has provided a continuous record of the changes in the supernova.

In the new Hubble image, SN 1987A is surrounded by a ring of material that blew off the star thousands of years before it exploded. The ring extends about one light-year (about 6 trillion miles or 9.5 trillion km) across. Inside that ring, the star's guts are rushing outward in an expanding debris cloud.

Most of the light from the supernova comes from radioactive decay of elements that were created in the explosion. This light fades over time, but the brightening of SN 1987A's debris suggests that a new power source is lighting it.

The debris of 1987A is beginning to impact the surrounding ring, which is creating powerful shock waves that produce X-rays that can be observed by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. Those X-rays are illuminating the supernova debris and the heated shock waves are making it glow. This same process powers well-known supernova remnants in our own galaxy, like Cassiopeia A.

Furthermore, since SN 1987A is still young, astronomers can study the remnants of the explosion to decode its history.

Eventually, that history will be lost when the bulk of the expanding stellar debris impacts the surrounding ring and shreds it, researchers said. But, until then, SN 1987A offers astronomers the opportunity to watch as a supernova changes, they added.
