DIY Cryogenic Fluid Made from Dry Ice and Rubbing Alcohol Performs Most Liquid Nitrogen Demonstrations

DIY Cryogenic Fluid Made from Dry Ice and Rubbing Alcohol Performs Most Liquid Nitrogen DemonstrationsDIY Cryogenic Fluid Made from Dry Ice and Rubbing Alcohol Performs Most Liquid Nitrogen DemonstrationsIf you're a science hobbyist you probably don't have access to actual liquid nitrogen (-320 degrees Fahrenheit) but you can make your own cryo-fluid from dry ice and rubbing alcohol that goes down to -110 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to instantly freeze flowers, cherries, and other popular liquid nitrogen demonstrations.

Amateur scientist weblog AmaSci demonstrates creating this cryo-fluid in the above video using soda bottles to contain the extremely cold liquid. You'll cut the top from a 2-liter and 20-oz soda bottle and poke many holes in the bottom of the smaller 20-oz bottle. Fit the smaller bottle in the larger bottle "chamber" and add chunks of dry ice all along the outside, at least two-inches high on all sides and then pour enough 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol to saturate the dry ice. The extremely cold liquid will enter the smaller chamber via the holes and you can then use a pair of metal tongs to lower flowers, leaves, and other small items inside where they will almost instantly freeze. If you can't get dry ice pellets, you'll have to break it apart with a hammer and chisel into small chunks.

This experiment can be dangerous if you do something dumb like stick your finger in the -110 F cryo-fluid so this probably isn't for you if you're accident prone. The cryo-fluid will stick to your hands like napalm instead of evaporating like real liquid nitrogen. I'd also use something heavy to support the bottom of the 2-liter pop bottle?that is not a spill I'd want to clean up. If you're a science teacher, though, this might be for you.

Pa. railroad calendar delivered 63 years late

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) ? A northeastern Pennsylvania newspaper has just received a calendar to help ring in the new year ? except the year is 1950.

Scranton's The Times-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/S23ykD ) a mail carrier delivered it 63 years late without explanation on Friday.

The large tube contained a 1950 Pennsylvania Railroad calendar addressed to James Flanagan, former general manager of The Scranton Times.

The calendar includes a holiday greeting from a railroad executive dated December 1949. Flanagan died that month.

A U.S. Postal Service spokesman says lost mail is sometimes found when a machine is dismantled or office space is renovated.

Times-Tribune publisher Bobby Lynett says he'll see if the Steamtown National Historic Site railroad museum is interested in the calendar. If not, he'll display it in the newspaper's offices.

Ask Engadget: best barebones workstation chassis?

Ask Engadget best barebones workstation chassis

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Charles, who's capping off the year with a fine question about DIY PC chassis. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I work in motion graphics and it's upgrade time. I'm a DIY and Windows nut, so I'm looking to build my own tower, but the cases are all so horrible! I don't need a plastic window, or something that looks like it was designed by aliens -- just something that's sharp, solid, good looking and has a respectable airflow. Is that too much to ask?"

Well, we trawled our brains (as well as a fair chunk of the internet) looking for some classy chassis, and this is what we found:

  • Corsair's Obsidian 550D may have a plastic window, but otherwise it's a monolithic piece of imposing black metal that won't ugly up your office.
  • Coolermaster's Silencio 650 is hewn from diamond-cut aluminum and drops the plastic window, and given the company's heritage, should have excellent airflow.
  • Finally, there's the Lian-Li PC-A71F, which can only be described as terrifyingly sleek.

But what about you all? Let's cap the year off with some stylish PC cases, peace and goodwill to everyone and a very happy New Year to you, the Engadgeteers.

(AP) ? President Evo Morales nationalized the Bolivian electricity distribution subsidiaries of the Spanish energy company Iberdrola in a public ceremony Saturday.

Morales issued a decree allowing the takeover of shares in Empresa de Electricidad de La Paz (Electropaz) and Empresa de Luz y Fuerza de Oruro (Elfeo), which supply energy in this Andean nation.

Soldiers guarded the installations of the electricity distribution companies, marked with signs reading: "Nationalized."

In the ceremony at Bolivia's government palace, Morales also announced the expropriation of an investment management company and a service provider belonging to the Spanish energy giant.

Morales said he had "been forced to take this step" to ensure that electric service rates remain "equitable" in the regions of La Paz and Oruro.

The Spanish government said in a statement that it regretted Bolivia's decision to nationalize companies that included "Spanish, Argentine and American companies among its shareholders."

Spain said it hoped "the process of assessing the value of the nationalized company is done with high standards of objectivity that would establish the just compensation to which shareholders are entitled."

Telephone calls and emails seeking comment from Iberdrola in Spain were not immediately answered.

The decree read by Morales calls for Iberdrola to receive indemnification after an independent firm is hired within 180 days to determine the value of the nationalized shares.

Morales in May also nationalized Transportadora de Electricidad belonging to Spanish company Red Electrica, which controlled 74 percent of energy transmission in Bolivia.

In his first year in office in 2006, the Bolivian president nationalized the oil industry through a renegotiation of contracts with a dozen oil companies, including Repsol, Petrobras, BG and Total.

In 2009 Morales transferred to state control the country's largest telephone operator, which had been controlled by Italy's ETI, and in 2010 he did the same with the four largest power generators, which had belonged to French-owned Suez, Rurelec of Britain and Bolivian shareholders.

Looking For A Pet Gate? You'll Have Many Options ? Life with ...

If you?ll remember, I asked for a pet gate this Christmas.

Carlson Extra-tall Walk Through Pet Gate

Well, I?m happy to report that ?Santa? came through, and I?m eagerly awaiting our move so we can put it up and try it out.

As you may have read before, it took a while for us to pick out a pet gate, since it needed to accommodate a number of specific requirements. So time will tell if this gate can really pass the test. (Don?t worry, I?ll keep you all posted!)

That said, there are dozens of pet gates available for purchase, and they all offer different features. I wanted to share some of those specifics with you, in case you too are looking for the perfect pet gate.

Material

Material can play a major role in durability, cost and more. Most gates that I?ve found come in one of three materials:

  • Wood (these come in a variety of finishes)
  • Metal (these come in a variety of finishes, too)
  • Plastic

While no one material is superior over another, they do each have their own pros and cons. For example, as nice as wood may look, a young puppy may chew on it or your cat may scratch on it. Similarly, a nice wooden gate may look more attractive in your home than a plastic one, and so on.

Mounting

Detail of the pet gate above

This is probably one of the most important variables you?ll want to consider. How a gate mounts can impact where it?s located, how easily you can move it, how secure it will be and more.

  • Wall-mount: Many heavier/more intense gates are wall-mounted. This means that some part of the gate will be screwed into your wall, which will make it more secure. Gates that are wall-mounted will likely be in that location for a while, as you can?t move them easily.
  • Pressure-mount: Pressure-mount gates are the ones that do not screw into the wall; instead you manually adjust the tension to hold it in place. If not done properly, these can be knocked out of place. Some pressure-mount gates also come with a wall-mounting option.

*If you?re considering placing a pet gate in a doorway that has a baseboard, look for a gate that features an independent tension system. This means you can adjust the top tension to one width, and the bottom tension to another width.

  • Free-standing: These gates can go just about anywhere, since they stand on their own. Some may have their own feet to hold them up, others may be modular, consisting of several sections, so you can shape them as needed.

Height

Richell Freestanding Pet Barrier

Thankfully, gates come in a variety of heights to meet all of our needs: from the low gates that are perfect for small, non-jumping pets to extra-tall gates.

Most that are tall enough feature walk-through doors for humans. Extra-tall gates are ideal for larger pets/children and pets that are capable of jumping over lower gates. (http://bit.ly/Uh8ssc)

Width

Keep in mind that some pet gates only extend to a specific width. To accommodate larger door openings, some come with extensions you can add on the ends. Others require you to purchase these separately.

Some gates come in extra-wide widths for larger openings.

Barrier Design

  • Diamond/square/hexagon: These patterns are popular on less-expensive pressure-mounted gates. However, as I found out with CG, they may also be easily climbed by a smaller, agile pet.
  • Bars: Bars can be a great solution for pets who have a tendency of climbing pet gates. That said, make sure you check the distance between each bar. Some of us have small pets who may be able to squeeze through them.
  • Screen/fabric: Instead of featuring metal bars or crisscrossing wood, these gates feature a piece of material that blocks off one room from another. (http://bit.ly/Uhat7E)

Walk-through Door

These are ideal especially if your gate is too high for you to step over easily. This is its own topic since these doors can vary greatly from gate to gate. Read a product?s details to learn the specific features of your walk-through gate. In the meantime, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Carlson Extra-tall Walk Through Pet Gate

How the gate opens: Some require you to lift the door, others require you to press a button with your hand or foot. Carefully consider this to figure out what would be easiest for you, and which your pet can?t manipulate.

  • Which way the door swings: This is especially important if your gate is located at the top of stairs. Some doors are made specifically for this, so it won?t open toward the stairs. This prevents anyone from accidentally falling through the door and down the stairs.
  • If the door locks: Some doors feature other locking mechanisms that make it additionally difficult for anyone or anything to get through unintentionally.

While you?re thinking of all of those things, also consider how often you?ll walk through the gate, if you?ll be holding anything (may impact how many hands you?ll have free to open the gate), etc. Some gates even feature an automatic close.

Extra Features?

  • Pet door: Perfect if you?re trying to keep a larger pet or child in one room, but want to give free rein to a cat or smaller pet. (http://bit.ly/Uh8ssc) Check the dimensions of the pet door to make sure it?s the right size for your smaller pets.

Have you purchased a pet gate? Which features were most important to you? Please share in the comments!

America's Freedom of Religion Doctrine is Under Threat ...

EVANSTON, Ill. --- ?The American law of freedom of religion is in trouble, because growing numbers of critics, including a near majority of the Supreme Court, are ready to cast aside the ideal of religious neutrality.?

That is the opening sentence of ?Defending American Religious Neutrality,? the provocative new book by Andrew Koppelman, an influential Constitutional scholar who is the John Paul Stevens Professor of Law at Northwestern University.

In the book, set for publication on Jan. 1, 2013, Koppelman takes on critics of the First Amendment?s ?establishment? clause who increasingly are branding its freedom of religion doctrine as both ?incoherent and substantially unattractive.? Their solution would be to replace it with ?a new set of rules far friendlier to official endorsement of religion.?

Those proposals, Koppelman argues, would ?lead to heightened civil strife, corruption of religion and oppression of religious minorities.? He goes on to mount a rigorous legal defense of the view that American religious neutrality is in fact both coherent and attractive.

?If the state gets to discern God?s will,? he writes, ?we will be told that God wants the reelection of the incumbent administration.? The First Amendment?s leading framers believed strongly that religion can be corrupted by state support, he says.

America?s religious neutrality has become more vague over time as the country became far more religiously diverse, but Koppelman contends that is a strength, arguing America has been ?unusually successful? in dealing with religious diversity. He points out the U.S. has achieved ?civil peace? in these matters far beyond the capabilities of other democracies, such as those in Europe, to do so.

Koppelman acknowledges there are inconsistencies that appear to stem from American law on religious issues. For instance, how do we reconcile the ban on official prayers and Bible reading in public schools while still having ?In God We Trust? printed on U.S. currency or beginning many legislative sessions with prayers? And how do we justify making Christmas a holiday or explain the confusion over faith-based social services, public financing of religious schools and the teaching of ?intelligent design??

The key for Koppelman in resolving these puzzles is the concept of religious neutrality and the need for the state to distance itself, to keep ?some degree of abstraction away from controversial conceptions of the good.?

The book explains the fundamental wisdom of the First Amendment doctrine that treats religion as a good thing, and as such, ?holds that religion?s value is best honored by prohibiting the state from trying to answer religious questions.?

Following is an edited transcript of a recent interview with Koppelman about his new book:

Q: What is the central Constitutional theme of your book??

A: Discussions of the religion clauses of the Constitution tend to represent two broad views: ?Either the people who want government to be able to endorse any religious proposition that it wants, to declare that the U.S. is a Christian nation or to authorize the government to embrace whatever religious propositions it sees fit, or the ones who think government is to be a religion-free zone which is completely blind to any value associated with religion.?

What I try to show in the book is that American law is not a member of either of those camps. What American law actually does is regard religion as a good thing but insists that its value be understood at a very high level of abstraction, so that government takes no position on any controversial religious question.

Q: But there are many inconsistencies in the law as it applies to religion, aren?t there?

A: This is theoretically untidy and is made worse by the fact that American law grandfathers in a huge number of practices that violate this rule about taking no position on any religious question. The rules are that these practices are OK, but, for instance, the Supreme Court decided that the Ten-Commandment display is OK if it has been around for 50 years, not if it has been put up last week. That?s just how American law goes. There are all kinds of untidiness about this.

Q: Is this approach something uniquely American?

A: The U.S. is the most religiously diverse society in the history of the planet. And we do a better job of managing our diversity than other high functioning rich countries. If you compare the status of our religious minorities with what?s going on in France or in Germany we look pretty good. So, I think that it?s worth taking the trouble to understand how the Americans actually do it. And if you understand how the Americans actually do it, then maybe there?s something to be said for doing it our way.

Q: What about separation of church and state, doesn?t religion still strongly influence our politics?

A: There is a misconception that is shared by people with very different views that says if you are in favor of a very strong separation of church and state, you must be hostile to religion. People on the left and right, people who are and aren?t hostile to religion, share this view. But when the framers put this strong separation in place, they did it because they valued religion so much and they thought that religion would be corrupted by state control.

Q: You single out the views of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in the book as a leading thinker who fails to appreciate the unique kind of religious neutrality you are defending.

A: The sheer diversity of religions is something that Justice Scalia, who purports to be an Originalist, doesn?t really get. Scalia suggested being friendly to religion means you embrace the idea of monotheism, and the Ten Commandments. It?s as if he?s never heard of Hinduism or Buddhism. It?s very strange.?

Bharti Infratel shares drop 13 percent in market debut

NEW DELHI/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Bharti Infratel, backed by billionaire Sunil Mittal, dived 13 percent in its trading debut after raising about $760 million in India's biggest IPO in two years, weighed down by a cautious outlook for mobile tower operators.

The IPO, priced near the lower end of an indicative range to ensure success, struggled to find interest from retail investors and was supported mostly by overseas institutional buyers, a key pillar in the Indian stock market.

Bharti Infratel's poor trading debut is unlikely to deter future offerings in India, bankers said, with strong foreign fund bids expected to underpin the share market.

"It's early days and the stock should settle in the course of the next day or two. If the foreign flows continue, the market will remain buoyant which should translate into more deals," a person familiar with the Bharti Infratel IPO said. "If not IPOs, there should be more follow-on offerings."

Already, privately owned Axis Bank Ltd has announced plans to raise fresh equity capital, and the source said a possible listing of National Stock Exchange is among the other IPOs that investors can expect.

Bharti Infratel's listing follows a tepid first half in IPO deals, and is the biggest after state-run Coal India's $3.5 billion issue in 2010.

The listing pushed India's IPO volume to $1.28 billion this year, shy of last year's $1.36 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data. But that is still short of the record set in 2007 when Indian corporates raised $8.65 billion through IPOs.

IPO volumes are expected to improve further on rising foreign capital inflows. Several high-profile deals including the potential IPO of Vodafone Group Plc's India unit are likely to hit as earlier as next year, bankers said.

Including follow-on share offers, share sales volumes in India jumped 70 percent from a year earlier to $14.8 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data.

The market will likely remain busy in 2013 with two large share sales in state-run Oil India Ltd and NTPC Ltd set to come in the next few weeks as part of the government's plan to raise around $5.5 billion by exiting part of its stakes across a slew of companies.

"The quality of companies do matter a lot. Investors are latching on to good quality names or where corporate governance and business risks are far lower," said Dhananjay Sinha, the Mumbai-based co-head of institutional research at Emkay Global Financial Services.

Bharti Infratel, a unit of top Indian mobile phone carrier Bharti Airtel Ltd and partly owned by KKR & Co Ltd , closed at 191.65 rupees, having fallen as much as 14.3 percent during trade on the National Stock Exchange.

Bharti Infratel had issued shares at 220 rupees to funds and wealthy investors, who received the majority of the allocation. The company sold shares to retail investors at 210 rupees and to cornerstone investors at 230 rupees.

The broader Nifty, which has surged about 28 percent this year and is Asia's third best-performing market, ended 0.65 percent higher.

POOR SHOWING

Bharti Infratel's share performance was poor compared with the surge in shares of Credit Analysis and Research Ltd and PC Jeweller Ltd, both of which made their market debut this week after raising around $100 million each.

Weighing on the outlook for mobile tower operators, an Indian court this year revoked permits of several wireless carriers while demand growth for third and fourth-generation mobile data services slowed.

"The business of towers is under stress," said K.K. Mital, a portfolio manager at Globe Capital in New Delhi. "This is a business with a long gestation period and also not something retail and HNIs (high net worth investors) easily understand."

Shares of GTL Infrastructure Ltd , the only other mobile tower operator listed in India, have slumped 90 percent in the last two years, hit by debt repayment worries.

Bharti Infratel priced its IPO at lower valuations to overcome those concerns, and managed to attract more than a dozen cornerstone investors including units of Morgan Stanley and Citigroup Inc .

Bharti Infratel sold about 146 million new shares, or more than three quarters of the shares on offer, while four of its private equity investors, including Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings and the private equity arm of Goldman Sachs Group Inc , sold a total of 42 million shares as they cashed out of some of their early investments.

The selling price was at a steep discount to the $1 billion that seven funds including Temasek and Goldman arm had paid in 2007 for a combined 9 percent stake in Bharti Infratel. KKR separately invested $250 million in 2008, but its exact holding is not known.

Bharti Airtel, which owned 86 percent of the tower operator before the IPO, did not sell any shares in the process.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Plc, Deutsche Bank AG, HSBC Holdings Plc, JPMorgan Chase & Co, Standard Chartered Plc and UBS AG were the foreign banks underwriting the IPO.

Kotak Mahindra Bank and Enam Securities were the domestic banks handling the share sale.

Bharti Infratel has about 34,000 towers and owns 42 percent of Indus Towers, the world's largest tower operator. Along with Indus, Bharti Infratel has a 38 percent share of the Indian telecommunications tower market.

Nervous retailers hope for post-Christmas rush

11 hrs.

The biggest holiday of the season is over, but retailers are hoping that you aren?t done with your holiday shopping quite yet.

?The next few days are critical for retailers. They?ve got some catching up to do,? said Marshal Cohen, retail industry analyst with NPD Group.

On Wednesday, big chains including Macy's were already pushing their post-Christmas bargains, while major discounters?including Wal-Mart were encouraging shoppers to redeem their gift cards right away. But the fallout from a big Christmas storm could hurt their efforts if shoppers decide they prefer a cozy rest of the week at home instead.

Retailers had started off the all-important holiday shopping season in a much cheerier mood, as Black Friday shoppers appeared to gobble down turkey and rush to the stores ? and their computers ? in search of holiday gifts and bargains.

But then, a combination of factors including Superstorm?Sandy and the political upheaval over the fiscal cliff appeared to dim shoppers? moods. Experts also?said the stronger start to the season may have been a sign that people finished up early and had fewer last-minute shopping trips to make.

?The early start certainly looked like it meant that the consumer was in full spirits,? Cohen said. ?But in reality just because they had a front-loaded holiday didn?t mean there was going to be that much more spending to come.?

It's too early to paint a complete picture of how retailers fared so far in the most crucial season of the year. But early indications have some fretting that the year will end up being weaker than many had initially hoped.

Holiday-related sales rose 0.7 percent from Oct. 28 through Dec. 24, as compared to last year, according to data from Mastercard Advisors SpendingPulse. That was the lowest growth rate for that period?since 2008, at the depths of the recession. The same?survey showed a 2 percent increase in 2011.

The SpendingPulse data is based on estimates of payments made through the MasterCard network as well as by cash and check. It tracks holiday-related purchases including apparel, electronics and jewelry.

Research firm ShopperTrak, which compiles sales estimates based on foot traffic, said last week that it expects holiday sales to increase by 2.5 percent. That?s down from?its previous estimate that sales would increase by 3.3 percent.

But other researchers have not changed their initial forecasts for the season.

On Wednesday, the International Council of Shopping Centers, which produces an index of chain store sales along with Goldman Sachs, said it was holding to its estimate that holiday sales at chain stores would rise 3 percent this year.

?The ICSC?s chief economist, Michael Niemira, said in a note that sales in the last week of December could benefit from a calendar shift that put Christmas Eve on Monday this year.

A National Retail Federation spokeswoman said in an e-mail Wednesday that it also was sticking with its forecast that holiday sales would grow 4.1 percent to $586.1 billion.

Experts caution that it?s hard to say just yet what the final data will show, especially once post-holiday bargains are factored in.

?There?s no question that we saw a lot of (the) momentum slow down. How much did it slow down? We don?t really know yet,? Cohen said.

Holiday sales are considered crucial to retailers, and some can expect to make as much as half their profits, and 30 percent of their sales, during the two-month period.

The fiscal cliff, Superstorm?Sandy and other external factors are partly to blame for souring shoppers? moods toward the end of the season. But experts say shoppers have in recent years also become more savvy about sussing out bargains.

They?ve also become more bargain-conscious. C. Britt Beemer, retail analyst with America?s Research Group, said in a research note that major discounters appeared to fare best in keeping their customers.

?Consumers were very frugal this year, as we said all along,? Beemer said in the note.

The increasing shift to online shopping also may not be helping retailers pick up any extra sales. That?s because when a person shops online, they tend to seek out the best bargain and then buy that item. An in-store shopper may be more tempted to walk the other aisles, pick up a few things for themselves or do some other impulse shopping they hadn?t planned on.

?The consumer didn?t spend a lot of time this year buying those extra gifts. They didn?t spend a lot of time spending on themselves instead of others,? Cohen said.

Information from Reuters was included in this report.

Could change in U.S. economic philosophy solve financial crises ...

Many people are apprehensive of the direction in which the economy is going, and as these concerns over dire financial situations emerge across the world, people are actively searching for information.
All across the globe financial situations have become dismal for many countries. Here in the U.S., the economy and the "fiscal cliff" have been consistently making headlines as the government attempts to work out a solution to solve the nation's financial crisis. According to one news website, the term "economic collapse" is a common search term.

Economic Collapse News is a relatively new startup, launched in 2011. ECN is a U.S.-based independent news publication whose mission is "to report on economic crises and show why they are mostly caused by various government policies which distort and disfigure the marketplace."

Stephen Otto, founder of ECN, said that due to his interest in economics and, being a study of the Austrian School of thought, he indicates he wants ECN to offer information relating to the causes of economic crises and possible solutions based upon these principles.

Digital Journal recently spoke via email with the founder of Economic Collapse News and learned more about the business and the Austrian economic school of thought. According to Mr. Otto, the Austrian School's business cycle theory explains the causes of recessions, describing them as being "generally" caused by government intervention, especially central bank manipulations, creating economic distortions. Stephen Otto founder of Economic Collapse News

According to the Austrian School's philosophy, proponents of Keynesian Economic policies have helped lead to the current financial crises. Digital Journal: Why did you start Economic Collapse News? Stephen Otto: When I started ECN I noticed that people were searching for information about the economy using the term "economic collapse". Being interested in economics and a student of the Austrian School of thought, I wanted to provide the information people were looking for with regard to the causes of economic crises, what the outlook for the future is, and potential solutions to the declining American economy. So I registered the domain economiccollapsenews.com and began writing about what I thought was happening to the economy based on my understanding of Austrian Economics. Digital Journal: What are your plans for 2013? Stephen Otto: What I want to continue doing in 2013 and beyond is to highlight the solutions that the Austrian School offers and direct people to the Mises Institute and other scholarly sources so they can learn what the true causes and solutions to economic recessions and depressions are. Digital Journal: What are your future goals? For instance, where do you hope to see Economic Collapse News in five years from now? Stephen Otto: Five years from now it is my hope that ECN will have grown in influence so that many more people will have an understanding of how the government and Federal Reserve are responsible for the substantial decline in the standard of living of Americans that I believe will take place during the next decade. It is important, I believe, that people put the blame for the coming rising prices where it belongs - namely the inflation of the money supply by the Federal Reserve. In our correspondence, Mr. Otto referred to Ron Paul, noting ECN "is partly inspired by him and other libertarians" in carrying out its mission. Economic concerns are not only a growing issue, but one that has a long way to go in reaching a solution. As the U.S. economy continues to struggle, many are likely wondering whether or not policymakers can truly resolve issues. Perhaps this leads to the question of whether or not it should it be up to the government to intervene and try to fix economic rough spots? Or perhaps maybe the better question is whether or not current philosophies can get the U.S. out of debt? What do you think? Could change in U.S. economic philosophy solve financial crises?

When eating healthy is a disorder | Live Well Nebraska

Ever know someone who seems to have lots of rules about what they will and will not eat? And maybe they follow these rules to a tee. Because of my profession, some people think I am like that, and they?re are surprised when they see me eat a slice of birthday cake or catch me with a dish of ice cream.

The term ?orthorexia? was coined by Dr. Steven Bratman, who was interested in describing his own eating behaviors. It?s the obsession with eating healthy. But unlike say, anorexia, it?s not a diagnosis recognized by the medical community. Orthorexia doesn?t include the obsession with weight or calories.

Instead, it is more associated with self esteem and the ability to adhere to a strict eating regimen. It involves the desire to control food quality and purity, and is often accompanied by the feeling that one?s diet is superior to the ?rest of the world.? It might start out with innocent healthy eating, but this condition can spin out of control when a person starts to take on rigid routines and strict diet ?rules.?

So what?s the difference between eating healthy as a lifestyle and being orthorexic? Eating healthy involves healthier patterns, like eating small meals often, allowing ?balance and a varied diet to prevail. Orthorexia involves an obsession with always eating extremely healthfully and causes people to feel extremely guilty when they go astray.

Ask yourself the following questions to determine if you may be headed in the direction of orthorexia. These are from the National Eating Disorders Association.

  • Do you wish that occasionally you could just eat and not worry about food quality?
  • Do you ever wish you could spend less time on food and more time on living and loving?
  • Does it sound beyond your ability to eat a meal prepared with love by someone else ? one single meal ? and not ?try to control what is served?
  • Are you constantly looking for the ways foods are unhealthy for you?
  • Do love, joy, play and creativity take a backseat to having the perfect diet?
  • Do you feel guilt or self-loathing when you stray from your diet?
  • Do you feel in control when you eat the correct diet?
  • Have you positioned yourself on a nutritional pedestal and wonder how others can possibly eat the food they eat?

If you think you might have a disordered eating pattern or orthorexia, seek help from a mental health professional or registered dietitian specializing in eating disorders.

Forney Families Happy To Be Home For The Holidays ? CBS Dallas ...

FORNEY (CBSDFW.COM) ? There?s no place like home for the holidays, claims the popular song.

In Forney?s Diamond Creek neighborhood, though, families are still trickling back, eight months after a tornado struck.

Some homes, being rebuilt from scratch, remain under construction. Others have disappeared entirely, leaving just a slab or empty lot behind. Several appear virtually untouched since the tornado, with broken windows and gaping holes.

?It was surreal. It was a warzone,? said Ronnie Smith.

The father of two remembers running past collapsed houses, searching for his own. ?You know that feeling where you just kind of lose your breath and you can?t get your breath back again?? he said.

His house escaped the worst of the storm, but still required repairs, that forced the family to stay with relatives for three months.

It?s only now they?re starting to feel settled again. ?My wife told me yesterday that our house is just now becoming a home again,? he said.

Monica McCrea said, her family couldn?t wait to come back, and returned home on Labor Day. ?Being in your own home is a wonderful thing,? she said.

The neighborhood is lot quieter now, and there aren?t as many Christmas decorations this year.
Those who?ve returned, though, say neighbors feel closer than ever.
