Mars Curiosity rover discovers ancient streambed on planet's surface (+video)

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced.

NASA's Curiosity rover found evidence for an ancient, flowing stream on Mars at a few sites, including the rock outcrop pictured here, which the science team has named 'Hottah' after Hottah Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. This image mosaic was taken by Curiosity's 100-millimeter Mastcam telephoto lens on its 39th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.

Photos from the Curiosity rover?have revealed several different rocky outcrops that contain stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. Some of these stones are rounded and large, indicating that they were transported relatively long distances across the Red Planet surface by water.

This water flow was likely quite vigorous, perhaps akin to the flows produced by flash floods in desert areas here on Earth, researchers announced today (Sept. 27).

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," Curiosity co-investigator William Dietrich, of the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement. [The Search for Water on Mars (Photos)]

"Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them," Dietrich added. "This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The findings came after researchers studied photographs of three different outcrops inside Gale Crater, where Curiosity touched down on Aug. 5.

The first outcrop, known as Goulburn, lies a few feet from the rover's landing site. Curiosity spotted the other two ? called Link and Hottah ? as it's been rambling toward an area called Glenelg, its first major science target.

Photos of Link really got the team thinking of long-ago stream flows, Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena, told reporters today. And images of Hottah, which juts from the Red Planet surface at an odd angle, pretty much sealed the deal.

"Hottah looks like someone jack-hammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient streambed," Grotzinger said in a statement.

On Earth, tilted outcrops are usually the result of tectonic activity. But Hottah could have been deformed by a nearby impact or other process, Grotzinger said.

The?water on Mars?likely flowed several billion years ago, researchers said, though an exact timeframe will be tough to determine. But the extent of the system that produced the outcrops ? and the surrounding alluvial fan and channels ? suggests that it wasn't produced in a single shot.

Rather, water was likely flowing over a relatively long chunk of time, scientists said.

"I'm comfortable to argue that it's certainly beyond the thousand-year timescale, but we're still gathering data to go further with that," Dietrich told reporters today.?

The team has not yet analyzed Link or Hottah with Curiosity's 10 different science instruments; rather, the researchers' conclusions are based on images of?Mars?snapped by the rover's Mast Camera. But those pictures capture plenty of evidence, Grotzinger said.

"In some cases, when you do geology, a picture's worth a thousand words," he said.

The $2.5 billion?Mars rover Curiosity?is about 50 days into a roughly two-year mission to determine if the Gale Crater area has ever been capable of supporting microbial life.

Despite the outcrop discoveries, the six-wheeled robot's ultimate destination remains the base of Mount Sharp, a 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) mountain that rises from Gale's Center. The mysterious mountain's foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

"A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," Grotzinger said. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

Ex-NY Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger dies

By The Associated Press

Anthony Camerano / AP

New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger in his office in New York in 1973. Sulzberger has died at age 86.

Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who led the newspaper to new levels of influence and profit amid some of the most significant moments in 20th-century journalism, died Saturday. He was 86.

Sulzberger, father of current Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., died at his home in Southampton, N.Y., after a long illness, his family announced to the newspaper.

During his three-decade-long tenure, the newspaper won 31 Pulitzer prizes, published the Pentagon Papers and won a libel case victory in New York Times vs. Sullivan that established important First Amendment protections for the press.

In an era of declining newspaper readership, the Times' weekday circulation climbed from 714,000 when Sulzberger became publisher in 1963 to 1.1 million upon his retirement as publisher in 1992. Over the same period, the annual revenues of the Times' corporate parent rose from $100 million to $1.7 billion.

"Above all, he took the quality of the product up to an entirely new level," the late Katharine Graham, chairwoman of The Washington Post Co., said at the time Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's title. When she died in 2001, he returned the praise, saying she "used her intelligence, her courage and her wit to transform the landscape of American journalism."

"Punch" Sulzberger was the only grandson of Adolph S. Ochs (pronounced ox), the son of Bavarian immigrants who took over the Times in 1896 and built it into the nation's most influential newspaper. The family retains a controlling interest to this day, holding a separate block of Class B shares that have more powerful voting rights than the company's publicly traded shares.

Power was thrust on Sulzberger at the age of 37 after the sudden death of his brother-in-law in 1963. He had been in the Times executive suite for eight years in a role he later described as "vice president in charge of nothing."

But Sulzberger directed the Times' evolution from an encyclopedic paper of record to a more reader-friendly product that reached into the suburbs and across the nation.

During his tenure, the Times started a national edition, bought its first color presses, and introduced popular as well as lucrative new sections covering topics such as science, food and entertainment.

A key figure in the transformation was A.M. Rosenthal, executive editor from 1977 to 1986. Rosenthal, who died in 2006, called Sulzberger "probably the best publisher in modern American history."

Sulzberger also improved the paper's bottom line, pulling it and its parent company out of a tailspin in the mid-1970s and lifting both to unprecedented profitability a decade later.

In 1992, Sulzberger relinquished the publisher's job to his 40-year-old son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., but remained chairman of The New York Times Co.

Sulzberger retired as chairman and chief executive of the company in 1997. His son then was named chairman. Sulzberger stayed on the Times Co. board of directors until 2002.

Significant free-press and free-speech precedents were established during Sulzberger's years as publisher, most notably the Times vs. Sullivan case. It resulted in a landmark 1964 Supreme Court ruling that shielded the press from libel lawsuits by public officials unless they could prove actual malice.

In 1971 the Times led the First Amendment fight to keep the government from suppressing the Pentagon Papers, a series of classified reports on the Vietnam War. Asked by a reporter who at the Times made the decision to publish the papers, Sulzberger gestured toward his chest and silently mouthed the word "Me."

Sulzberger read the more than 7,000 pages of the Pentagon Papers before deciding to publish them. After Sulzberger read the papers, he was asked what he thought. "Oh, I would think about 20 years to life," he responded.

But in a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court eventually sided with the Times and The Washington Post, which had begun publishing the papers a few days after the Times.

Gay Talese, who worked at the Times as a reporter when Sulzberger took over and chronicled the paper's history in his book "The Kingdom and the Power," called him "a brilliant publisher. He far exceeded the achievements of his father in both making the paper better and more profitable at a time when papers are not as good as they used to be."

In their book "The Trust," a history of the Ochs-Sulzberger family and its stewardship of the paper, Susan E. Tifft and Alex S. Jones cited Sulzberger's "common sense and unerring instincts."

In an interview in 1990 with New York magazine, Sulzberger was typically candid about the paper's readership.

"We're not New York's hometown newspaper," he said. "We're read on Park Avenue, but we don't do well in Chinatown or the east Bronx. We have to approach journalism differently than, say, the Sarasota Herald Tribune, where you try to blanket the community."

In the mid-1980s Sulzberger authorized the building of a $450 million color printing and distribution plant across the Hudson River in Edison, N.J., part of a plan to get all printing out of cramped facilities in the Times building in Manhattan.

Sulzberger was born in New York City on Feb. 5, 1926, the only son of Arthur Hays Sulzberger and his wife, Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger, Adolph's only child. One of his three sisters was named Judy, and from early on he was known as "Punch," from the puppet characters Punch and Judy.

Sulzberger's grandfather led the paper until his death in 1935, when he was followed by Sulzberger's father, who remained at the helm until he retired in 1961.

Meanwhile, Arthur served in the Marines during World War II and, briefly, in Korea. He later observed, in a typically self-deprecating remark, that "My family didn't worry about me for a minute. They knew that if I got shot in the head it wouldn't do any harm."

Except for a year at The Milwaukee Journal, 1953-54, the younger Sulzberger spent his entire career at the family paper. He joined after graduating from Columbia College in 1951. He worked in European bureaus for a time and was he was back in New York by 1955, but found he had little to do.

Sulzberger had not been expected to assume power at the paper for years. His father passed control to Orvil E. Dryfoos, his oldest daughter's husband, in 1961. But two years later Dryfoos died suddenly of heart disease at 50. Punch Sulzberger's parents named him publisher, the fourth family member to hold the title.

"We had all hoped that Punch would have many years more training before having to take over," said his mother, Iphigene. Sulzberger relied on senior editors and managers for advice, and quickly developed a reputation as a solid leader.

At various times, Sulzberger was a director or chairman of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, American Newspaper Publishers Association and American Press Institute. He was a director of The Associated Press from 1975 to 1984.

Sulzberger married Barbara Grant in 1948, and the couple had two children, Arthur Jr. and Karen. After a divorce in 1956, Sulzberger married Carol Fox. The couple had a daughter, Cynthia, and Sulzberger adopted Fox's daughter from a previous marriage, Cathy.

Carol Sulzberger died in 1995. The following year, Sulzberger married Allison Cowles, the widow of William H. Cowles 3rd, who was the president and publisher of The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Chronicle of Spokane, Wash.

Some "Curious" US And French Military Deployments

Regular readers are aware that periodically, usually weekly, Zero Hedge presents critical naval updates demonstrating the positioning of key US maritime assets, primarily strategic aircraft carriers. The location of these indicates far more what US foreign policy is focused on at any moment, than propaganda distributed for general consumption via the coopted media. Today, however, instead of focusing on aircraft carriers, using Stratfor analysis, we present several broad "curious" US and French military developments.

What the ultimate purpose of these movements is for now unclear - they may be perfectly normal deployments or they may be a precursor to something more. Remember: we know that both CVN-74 (which is currently just briefly caught up in that whole Senkaku Snafu between Japan and China) Stennis and Marine force LHA-1 Peleliu are en route to Iran, where following last week's modestly paliative Netanyahu comments, the military strategists believe the tide has turned and there will be no war with Iran in the immediate future. Ironically, following a spike in war chatter in the early summer, we said that precisely because of that there will be no conflict imminently as the Israeli military will never telegraph what it plans on doing in advance.

And, as always when dealing with military data originating from "sources", reader beware. Ultimately, even if untrue, the information will provide hints about whose agenda it is to foment military tensions.

Analysis, via Stratfor

According to a worldwide network of aircraft spotters and trackers, at least a dozen MC-130H, HC-130N, HC-130P and AC-130U military transport planes and gunships crossed the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 13 heading eastbound. These aircraft are typically used for a variety of special tasks, including in close cooperation with special operations forces. The last reported stop for the aircraft was Souda Bay, Crete. It is unclear whether the aircraft have left Crete, but we are working on tracking them down.

A week and a half later, on Sept. 24, the same network of aircraft spotters noted 12 U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets arriving in two waves at Moron air base in Spain. It is not known where the squadron is heading, though it could be en route to Afghanistan to reinforce elements there. The Harrier squadron that suffered heavy losses in the Sept. 14 attack on Camp Bastion has already been replaced by another Harrier unit, so it is unlikely that the squadron's deployment is directly linked to that event. It is also possible that the F/A-18s are heading to the Gulf Cooperation Council region. A number of air superiority squadrons, including an F-22 Raptor squadron, have already deployed to the region. If that is the case, the squadron is intended simply as reinforcements or replacements for assets currently deployed there.

Also on Sept. 24, The New York Times published an article stating that Iraq and the United States were negotiating an agreement that could result in the return of small units of U.S. soldiers to Iraq on training missions. At the request of the Iraqi government, according to U.S. Gen. Robert Caslen, a unit of Army special operations soldiers was recently deployed to Iraq to advise on counterterrorism and to help with intelligence. It is possible that at least some of the MC-130 aircraft previously mentioned were delivering these special operations troops to Iraq.

Another report on Sept. 24, this one by the Le Figaro French-language newspaper, said some 100 French special operations troops had been deployed in the sub-Saharan region to counteract militants in northern Mali. Le Figaro also reported that maritime patrol aircraft that can be used to collect intelligence will be deployed to the region and that commandos of the French navy will reinforce the French special operations troops.

Finally, Italian journalist Guido Olimpio reported in September that U.S. unmanned aerial vehicles are currently tracking militants in Cyrenaica, the historical name for eastern Libya. He also said "reliable sources" had confirmed that U.S. special operations forces were planning to carry out intelligence operations that could be in preparation for surgical strikes in North Africa, including in Libya and in Mali.

All these deployments could be previously scheduled movements for training or part of ongoing operations. They also do not necessarily mean any one mission is imminent. The United States and France could simply be positioning military assets in a region that is rife with conflict and that may eventually require rapid military intervention or action.

Search Engine Optimization And Your Online Presence | Internet ...

SEO is vital to keep up with the online traffic competitions. Search engines are the online traffic cops that direct people to various sites based on their search queries. If you want to generate more traffic for your website, use the tips in this article.

Do not create pages full of links. Add them into your content, so that they blend with the rest of the page. Readers don?t really like contextless links, and search engines penalize pages with a high link-to-text ratio. If your links flow naturally with your content, it will improve your relationship with both human readers and search engine bots.

Websites that offer useful information will rank higher than websites that only sell a product. You can post testimonials, articles on uses of your product, tips about how you select the product you sell, and much more.

If your the webmaster of a business site, getting the owner or CEO active on the site it will help boost your traffic. People may be very interested in hearing what the owner, the power behind the brand, has to say.

To give SEO a great boost, whenever possible use off-site links to quality content. This is really important when it comes to linking. Search engines like to see relevant off-site links more than internal links that connect the pages of your site. Try to secure links to sites that are going to refer to your site as well.

If you have a site that is written in a non-english language, use the language meta tag. Doing this will rank your website higher when someone searches in a particular language.

The more time that visitors spend on your site, the higher the website?s page rank will be. You want to keep people on your site as long as possible, and great content will keep them there and bring them back again!

Gear your efforts toward getting a few of the most popular search engines to rank your site highly. The major search engines all have their own way of utilizing SEO elements and establishing page rank. , Ask. com and Bing have their own sorts of nuances.

If you are sharing a server, you need to make sure that a banned site doesn?t share the same proxy. Sharing proxies with sites that spam or banned sites will reflect negatively on you. You might not get the traffic you want because your ratings get the same negative ratings as the sites you share proxies with.

Try including transcripts for videos or audio you post to your site. If you include audio and video transcripts on your site, search engines will be able to include that content to determine search rankings.

People make SEO sound like black magic, but it really comes down to the quality of your content. Focus on a keyword to keep your content short and sweet. Never submit an article that has spelling, punctuation or general grammar mistakes. When you content is well written, you will find a lot of success doing search engine optimization.

In order to generate more hits from search engines, try using longer or plural form of your keywords. Keyword stemming is a strategy that some search engines use. This means that the keyword ?accountant? may not be enough to bring in people who search for ?accountants? or ?accounting.? To use keyword stemming to your advantage, use the longer form, such as ?accounting?, so that your site is returned with search results for accountant.

Research any SEO company you consider for hire, prior to signing contracts. SEO has become big business, and there are many unqualified scammers ready to take your money and run. Do your research by verifying claimed expertise, double-checking testimonials and speaking with those who have hired your potential consultants before. You will be glad that you did this.

Successfully optimizing your site for search engines may seem intimidating, but as this article has shown you, it doesn?t have to be difficult. Knowing the few basic principles that determine how the search engines work, can help you tweak your site to attract more visitors than ever. Before you know it, you?ll have a slew of new

Festive mood among NFL's refs before contract vote

(AP) ? For the NFL's officials, the meetings to discuss their new contract looked like the first day of school.

Dozens of officials, some of whom hadn't seen each other in months, shook hands, hugged and laughed. They picked up new officials' hats and orange boxes with cleats. After a summer of conference calls and watching games on TV, the refs were ready to get back to work.

The officials met Friday night and were expected on Saturday to approve an offer reached after three weeks of flubs by league-hired replacements. The final push for a settlement, according to several officials, appeared to be a disputed touchdown call that decided Monday night's Packers-Seahawks game and left fans howling.

The deal reached late Wednesday must be approved by 51 percent of the union's 121 members.

Monday night's game ended in chaos after replacement refs called a touchdown catch for the Seahawks instead of a Packers interception. Many fans and commentators ? and players in the league ? thought the call was botched. Criticism of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and the league continued to escalate, and the labor dispute drew public comments from both President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. By late Wednesday, both sides had a deal.

"It's all history now," head linesman Tom Stabile said Friday morning. "For us, it was a benefit. It may have been the straw that broke the camel's back."

Line judge Jeff Bergman said he could see Monday night's play coming as he watched at home. He noticed that players were starting to take advantage of replacement officials struggling to keep control of the game.

"The last play of the game was something that was going to happen sooner or later," Bergman said. "It gave us and the league an opportunity to get together and hammer out a deal that was going to get hammered out anyway."

Referee Ed Hochuli, who led weekly tests and conference calls for officials to stay sharp during the lockout, declined to say whether the replacements made the right call.

"You really don't want to see that," Hochuli said. "You don't want to see the controversy. You don't want to see teams lose games that they shouldn't have lost, if indeed that's what happened. We're not making a judgment on that."

Now, the refs have to get used to being fan favorites.

The officials that worked Thursday night's game between the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

Referee Gene Steratore said the support "was something that kind of chokes you up."

Officials on Friday said they were ready for applause ? and ready for when it inevitably disappears.

"You're not really beloved by the public. You're tolerated. And to see that type of reception that our guys got last night was really heartwarming," said Bergman, who will head to Green Bay for Sunday's game, one week after Packers players ripped the replacements for calling Monday's disputed play a touchdown.

"After the euphoria of the moment wears off, probably sometime early in the second quarter, it'll be back to regular NFL football mode," Bergman said. "Players will be questioning our judgment, our ancestry. Coaches will be screaming at us. And it'll be life as back to normal on Sundays."

How do you cope with losing your best friends? - gabriella alejandra ...

Ok, so i know this isn't my normal type of blog post, but i feel like once and a while you should be able to get personal and if something affects you on a day to day basis, it's something worth talking about.

when i moved back to boston, i knew no body. i had few friends back home but they all seemed uninterested in commuting into the city for lunch or evening fun. and the trek back home to hang with the few people who didn't feel i neglected them by going to school, was a 4 hour long commute.?it was miserable.?i didn't/don't own a car, and all my friends did.?

?::i'll let that sink in a bit::

good? k.?

when i started to work (literally the day after i moved. talk about exhausted.) i was hopeful to meet new people and make new friends. my place of employment had a variety of?characters, and most of them were older men. the only girl within my?vicinity had a -to this day-?unknown grudge against me the minute i stepped foot in the department.

-no luck-

a month or so in, i got the?opportunity to do something a little more fun involving photoshoots.

there i met a few people who i would never thought would mean the entire world to me.

it took a while, but a friendship struck with one that would eventually blossom into something more.?

i had made a friend, excelled at work, got promoted into a position that involved what i went to school for, basically helped start up a website, and had what seemed to be a good relationship going.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?my heart was happy

this isn't going to be about my relationship, what happened, what didn't happen or any of that.

i'm heart broken to say it didn't work, but i felt i had made a life long friend.?

there were 3 of us. and i felt like we were a pact. we were awesome. they were the best people i knew and i felt so blessed to have them care for me as much i cared for them. i didn't think i could ever be happier.

things happen: breakups, arguments, fights, breakups within your other friends, new people, new lives.

i met someone new. someone great. someone who was nothing i've ever had before. and it was?exciting.

i was once in a relationship where we were both so involved with each other that we forgot about our friends, our family, everything but us. it ended horribly and i vowed that day on i would never leave behind the people i loved and have loved for a budding new romance. and i didn't. no matter who i was dating, i always, ALWAYS made time for my other friends.?whether it included my guy or not. i never wanted to get sucked into another relationship where i forget everyone else.?

so i was now in this new relationship, but never ever forgot about my 2 best. they were still my two best and would always be my 2 best. nothing had changed and we did all the same things we had always done. we got together for dinner and drinks a few times a week. we spent weekends having?BBQ?when it was nice out, going to amusement parks, shooting the shit at the park on sunny days or just hung out at one of our places. it was as if nothing changed. i spent time with my new guy, and kept my 2 best still as close as ever.

again, things happen: jealousy, feeling of?betrayal, doubts. new girlfriends. new boyfriends. whatever it was. who knows.?

i never wanted things to change. but that's just what happens and you have very minimal control over it, and no control over other peoples feelings.?

anger builds up, you hold grudges over minimal things. the friendship wasn't what it use to be.

i've had this happen before. when you're a girl in high school, you get sucked into girl drama pretty easily. if you didn't, lucky you.

but my 2 best were guys. this would never happen. we argue and then forget.

but i'm still a girl, and part of me still holds girl grudges like in high school.

one friendship ends, and that's when everything else unravels.?

the pact you thought would last forever slowly dies. and because you all drift apart, you seek other places for comfort and joy.?

but i still had one other person. one other friend. what about him??

well, it gets a little tricky when you go from you and your 2 best friends to you and 1 best friend, who also happens to be your ex.

he has someone new, but ?i feel like a new girlfriend meant he couldn't be friends with me.
i didn't do that to him. why would he do that to me?
i also felt like he had?chosen?sides in our "best friend pact". and it's wasn't mine. is that what changed everything? is that why i feel so alone?

as a couple, i put my all and everything into him. i'm not saying i was the best girlfriend ever, what i'm saying is i put all my trust and secrets into this one person. was i dumb for doing so? i was sure we would always be the best of friends. even with new relationships and our lives obviously going to new paths. but why would i ever stop being your friend because you met someone new? i wouldn't. was he uncomfortable being my friend? was everything he said to me a huge big lie?questions unanswered that i have little hope of ever knowing. but that's not what i'm here typing about.

i'm wondering how you cope with losing your best friends.

people you were so close with you considered family. someone you looked up to as a big brother. people who want nothing to do with you and you want everything to do with them. am i being over bearing? i don't think so. maybe i am. i'd just like to have my 2 best, sitting at our usual spots on?Thursday?nights or?Sunday?mornings, having drinks and?indulging?in food.

how do you make your heart calm knowing you'll never do those things again with those people?

how do i stop my brain from reenacting memories when i walk by places that meant something? how do i forget all those sunny days, late nights, big smiles and laughter? how do i forget?every restaurant, every bar, every appetizer shared, every story told, every laugh, every photo?

how do i stop my heart from aching?

how do i stop the pit in my stomach when i see these?people?who at one point were my 2 best?

how do i stop myself from bursting into tears passing by places with?memories?

How do i forget 3 years of my life?

i wonder if they feel the same. i doubt it, because their actions towards me make me feel like they had stopped caring at one point. but i'm hopeful that they miss me as much as i miss them.

Researchers discover what vampire squids eat

Thursday, September 27, 2012

About 100 years ago, marine biologists hauled the first vampire squid up from the depths of the sea. Since that time, perhaps a dozen scientific papers have been published on this mysterious animal, but no one has been able to figure out exactly what it eats. A new paper by MBARI Postdoctoral Fellow Henk-Jan Hoving and Senior Scientist Bruce Robison shows for the first time that, unlike its relatives the octopuses and squids, which eat live prey, the vampire squid uses two thread-like filaments to capture bits of organic debris that sink down from the ocean surface into the deep sea.

It's easy to imagine the vampire squid as a nightmarish predator. It lurks in the eternal midnight of the deep sea, has a dark red body, huge blue eyes, and a cloak-like web that stretches between its eight arms. When threatened, it turns inside out, exposing rows of wicked-looking "cirri." Even its scientific name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means "vampire squid from hell."

In reality, the vampire squid is a soft-bodied, passive creature, about the size, shape, and color of a football. A "living fossil," it inhabits the deep waters of all the world's ocean basins at depths where there is almost no oxygen, but also relatively few predators.

A few previous researchers have caught vampire squids in nets, hauled them up to the surface, and tried to figure out what they ate by examining the contents of their stomachs. The results were generally inconclusive. The stomachs typically contained bits and pieces of tiny, shrimp-like animals, microscopic algae, and lots of slimy goo.

In a recent article in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, Hoving and Robison show that vampire squids eat mostly "marine snow"?a mixture of dead bodies, poop, and snot. The dead bodies are the remains of microscopic algae and animals that live in the waters farther up in the ocean, but sink down into the depths after they die. The poop consists of fecal pellets from small, shrimp-like animals such as copepods or krill. The snot is mostly debris from gelatinous animals called larvaceans, which filter and consume marine snow using mucus nets.

In addition to looking at the stomach-contents of vampire squids from museum collections, the researchers used MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to collect live vampire squids and study their feeding habits in the laboratory. They also examined high-definition videos of vampire squids taken by MBARI's ROVs. Finally, they examined vampire-squid arms and feeding filaments under optical and scanning electron microscopes.

One key to Hoving and Robison's discovery was that they used MBARI's ROVs to collect living vampire squids, and were able to keep them alive in the laboratory for months at a time. Hoving soon found that if he placed bits and pieces of microscopic animals into a tank with a vampire squid, the food particles would stick to one of the string-like filaments that the animal sometimes extends outward from its body. The vampire squid would then draw the filament through its arms, removing the particles from the filament and enveloping them in mucus. Finally, the squid would transfer the glob of mucus and particles to its mouth and consume it.

Using MBARI's video annotation and reference system (VARS), Hoving also identified every MBARI ROV dive over the last 25 years during which researchers had seen a vampire squid. He then pored over 170 of these video clips (over 23 hours of footage) to look for additional clues as to what and how the animals ate.

The videos showed that vampire squids often drift motionless in the water, extending one of their thin filaments?up to eight times as long as the animal's body?like a fishing line. In many cases, Hoving saw bits of marine snow sticking to the filament. He also saw vampire squids slowly pulling in their filaments and scraping off the accumulated marine snow using their arms. Other vampire squids had globs of marine snow and mucus dangling from their mouths.

Under the microscope, the researchers observed that the vampire squid's suckers were covered with cells that produce mucus, which the animal apparently uses to collect and glue together individual particles of marine snow. Their filaments are covered with tiny hairs and a dense net of sensory nerves, which makes them extremely sensitive to touch.

When looking at vampire squids' stomach contents, the researchers did not see bones or pieces of individual animals that would indicate the vampire squids had captured live prey. Instead, they saw mostly amorphous bits of broken-up organic debris. The only prey they saw that might have been eaten alive were the remains of tiny crustaceans that sometimes "hitchhike" on sinking mucus nets or clumps of the marine snow.

After considering all the evidence, Hoving and Robison conclude that, "the vampire squid's filament is likely a multifunctional organ that is deployed to detect and capture detrital matter but at the same time may detect the presence of predators and perhaps small living prey."

The organic detritus that forms the bulk of the vampire squid's diet would not seem to be particularly nutritious. However vampire squids complement their frugal diet with an extremely energy-efficient lifestyle and unique adaptations. Their bodies are neutrally buoyant, so they don't have to expend energy to stay at a particular depth. Even better, they don't have to swim to find food, but simply extend their filaments to collect food that drifts past them.

Finally, vampire squids don't have to expend much energy avoiding predators, because they live at depths where there is so little oxygen that few other animals can survive. Conveniently, these deep, low-oxygen zones are often found where there is an abundance of life near the sea surface, which in turn creates lots of marine snow for vampire squids to eat. Hoving explains, "Because of its unique adaptations, the vampire squid is able to permanently and successfully inhabit the center of the oxygen minimum zone, an otherwise hostile environment where the vampire squid's predators are few, and its food is abundant."

Even though Hoving and Robison's research shows that the vampire squid is a "detritivore" rather than an active predator, its sinister appearance and stealthy habits will no doubt continue to fascinate both researchers and the general public.

Five Keys to Self-Managing our Emotional Intelligence

Property management at the very least can be described as chaotic at times. There are so many variables each and every day that can challenge our ability to accomplish our list of duties. How many times does the phone interrupt us? How many maintenance ?emergencies? arise? Yes the list can be quite extensive. When we feel like we are losing some control our emotions can get the better of us. Here are five keys to improving our own self-management.

    Be Consistent

Part of self-management is the ability to be stable. The values you hold dear should always be apparent. Always changing to the whim 86520564 200x300 Five Keys to Self Managing our Emotional Intelligenceof your peers or customers can not only cause others to question your beliefs. With consistency comes stability. Stability breeds trust. Consistency certainly aids productivity for you and your team. ?Maintaining consistency puts you on the right path towards emotional intelligence.

    Stick to the Plan

If you are responsible for particular tasks, do them. Don?t just do them, but make sure they are done to the best of your ability and in a timely manner. It is easy to feel out of control when you disregard the plan you are to follow. Do you have your plan in writing? Having it in writing has a couple of benefits. It gives you a great visual aid of the project outline and it also allows you to check items off as they have been completed.

    Be Accountable

There are times when things don?t work out as you plan, but you have to be able to admit that and then use your flexibility to get things back on track. The ideal result is that you easily bounce back and complete the task, but even during those times when this is not the case, you must adjust. We need to realize that we simply are not perfect. Mistakes do happen. Keeping this in mind allows us to have a true awareness of ourselves and that will help us react accordingly when things go wrong.

    Educate Yourself

We live in an ever-changing world and you want to be able to keep up with it. Don?t let change pass you by; embrace it. Be an avid reader. Talk and listen to mentors and peers. They may know something that could help you along your journey. Whether it?s on a tablet or a good old paperback, reading is so critical in this fast paced world. Do you have a set amount of time scheduled for reading and research each week? ?How about reading something on emotional intelligence, marketing, leadership, or self improvement.

    Stay Physically Fit

Many people don?t think of staying fit when they talk about self-management, but it is very important. Exercising your body is just as crucial to self-management as exercising your mind. A body that is not well rested, nutritionally fed or physically exercised can lead to emotional and physical illnesses. A well exercised body also facilitates a clearer mind which in turn leads to better time management and decisions.

Emotional intelligence is a very deep subject. The principles are sound but will always apply uniquely to each and every one of us. Part of emotional intelligence is self-management. When we recognize this need from a professional and personal level we can achieve a greater degree of success in our everyday lives. If you have any thoughts or contributions please feel free to share them in the comment section below.

Shopping Malls Vs Online Shopping ? Which Is Better?

For many years, a shopping mall was the center of all shopping activity for many people. However, with technology came online shopping, which in many ways, revolutionized the way people shop and do business. Many businesses adopted this new trend by setting up online stores to complement their physical stores. Currently, the decision to visit the local mall or shop online is a matter of personal preference, and the reasons for preferring one mode of shopping to the other vary, depending on who you ask. Below is a brief comparison of these two concepts.

The Similarity between the Shopping mall and an Online Store

The one thing these venues and online stores have in common is the wide variety of products and services that you can find in one place. The concept behind malls is to have an all-under-one roof design, whereby different vendors, retailers, service providers and other businesses can offer their products and services. Therefore, shoppers don?t have to move from one location to another, trying to find a particular brand or business.

Some of the common facilities that you can find in one of these venues include grocery stores, fast food outlets, cinema halls, supermarkets, banks, gaming arcades, electronic stores, and many more. The same concept applies to online shopping, though in a virtual state. Online shopping allows you to conveniently shop from multiple stores, simultaneously. However, online shopping has a slight advantage in that the range of products and services offered are limitless, whereas the shopping mall has to deal with space constraints.

The Advantages of Shopping Malls over Online Stores

Buying your stuff from the shopping mall is ideal, especially when it comes to buying personal effects such as clothing and jewelry. Some items require you to first, try them on, before you can buy. Buying clothes, underwear, jewelry and other personal effects, online, poses various challenges. First, it may not be possible to tell the exact color, size, and texture, among other attributes. When it comes to other items such as watches and jewelry, it may be impossible to verify the authenticity. Even though these attributes may be indicated, and some images of the items posted online, it is only through visiting the shopping mall that you can try out an item, verify the authenticity, and be satisfied before buying.

With the wide range of facilities that are physically available in these malls, you can take your family along to have a treat. You may choose to do an all-inclusive family shopping, grab something to eat in the restaurants, take your children to the video game arcades, watch a movie, visit the beauty salon, pay some bills, among other activities. With online stores, you can just shop.

The Advantages of Online Stores over Shopping Malls

Many people have busy schedules, hence finding the time to go to the mall, whether alone or with their families is impossible. You need considerable energy and time to go shopping. Apart from this, getting stuck up in traffic, having to wade through crowds of people, or having to deal with the hustle and bustle of children running around in the shopping mall is not the ideal shopping experience that some people would like. For this reason, they would rather stay at home and shop online, since it is more convenient. The comfort of your home or office, as well as the considerable time-saving is appealing to many shoppers.

In summary, both concepts seem to have their share of advantages and disadvantages. As such, the decision to shop either online or visit the shopping mall lies with individual circumstances, as well as preference.

Have you ever wondered whether you should go to the shopping mall, or you would rather stay at home and shop online? This article looks at these two shopping methods to help answer your questions.

Rowling's first novel for adults goes on sale

LONDON (AP) ? British bookshops opened their doors early Thursday and some grown-up Harry Potter fans lined up overnight as J.K. Rowling launched her long-anticipated first book for adults, "The Casual Vacancy."

The lines were shorter and the wizard costumes missing, but the book was published to some of the same fanfare that greeted each Potter tome, with stores wheeling out crates of the books precisely at 8 a.m.

Published five years after the release of the last book in the boy wizard saga, "The Casual Vacancy" is already at No. 1 on Amazon's U.S. chart, and bookmaker William Hill put 2/1 odds on it outselling "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which shifted 2.6 million copies in Britain on its first day.

Many of the early buyers were Harry Potter fans who, like the author, have moved on to more adult fare.

"I just like how much excitement there is about a book," said 23-year-old Grace Proctor, a "massive" Potter fan who was first to buy the book at one London store.

"I think there are going to be people who will hate it just because they can hate it," she said. "But she's such an amazing writer, I don't think she can go wrong."

A story of ambition and rivalry set in the fictional English village of Pagford, the novel recounts the civic warfare sparked when the unexpected death of a town official leaves a vacancy on the governing body.

Rowling has said she was aiming for Dickensian sweep in the multi-character saga, whose doses of sex, satire and swearing mark a distinct departure from wholesome Harry.

Reviews have been mixed. The Associated Press judged it a challenging but rewarding read full of emotion and heart, while The Guardian newspaper said it was "no masterpiece, but it's not bad at all: intelligent, workmanlike, and often funny." Several reviewers felt the lack of easily likable characters might be off-putting to readers.

It's likely nothing Rowling publishes will ever match the success of the Potter books, which have sold more than 450 million copies around the world.

But booksellers are confident "The Casual Vacancy" will be one of the year's best-sellers, whatever reviewers say.

"A lot of children have grown up with Harry Potter. They're now adults who love books," said Susan Sinclair, divisional manager for the Foyles bookstore chain.

"I think it's going to be a really big seller at Christmas. It'll be an easy gift ? but also a good one."

Qatar calls for no-fly zone in Syria

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Qatar has called on world powers to prepare a "Plan B" for Syria within weeks and set up a no-fly zone to provide a safe haven inside the country in case international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi fails to make progress in the crisis.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said he believed that Arab and European countries would be ready to take part, despite their public reluctance to commit the forces needed for such a mission.

Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, strongly supports the mainly Sunni Muslim Syrian rebels, while Shi'ite Iran backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite minority is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Western powers, meanwhile, have made clear that they are opposed to direct intervention and the United Nations Security Council will not sanction action against the wishes of Russia and China.

Speaking hours before U.S. President Barack Obama was due to address a United Nations summit, Sheikh Hamad also said he hoped that Washington would focus more on Syria after the presidential election in six weeks' time.

"I believe that within weeks we should have a Plan B," Sheikh Hamad told CNN in an interview. "You need to make safe-haven areas first of all for the people. That will require a no-fly zone.

"If the Syrians want to break that, that's another subject. That also needs somebody to have the teeth to tell them: 'Don't do that, because that will not be allowed'."

President Assad has resorted to air strikes by jets and helicopter gunships to hit rebel fighters in territory outside government control. The air strikes drove tens of thousands of refugees into Turkey and Jordan, prompting Turkey to call for the establishment of safe havens inside Syria.

Western powers have resisted the idea, but Sheikh Hamad suggested that countries may be prepared to bypass the U.N. Security Council. "A lot of Arab countries will participate and ... also European countries will participate," he said, "and ... I hope that after the election the American government looks at this matter in a different way."

Activists say that 27,000 people have been killed in Syria's uprising, which began as peaceful demonstrations for reform 18 months ago but has spiralled into an armed insurgency with sectarian overtones that could drag in regional powers.

Peace envoy Brahimi, who took over as international mediator at the start of September, said on Monday that the situation in Syria was "extremely bad and getting worse", and posed a threat to the Middle East and to global security.

He said he had a "few ideas" but not a full plan on how to end the conflict, though he hoped for an opening to break the violent stalemate "in the not too distant future".

Sheikh Hamad denied that Qatar had been arming the rebels, saying that his country provided logistic and humanitarian help. He said that a Sunni-Shi'ite confrontation would be catastrophic.

"That's a very dangerous scenario," he said. "My fear, if there is a Sunni-Shi'ite war or escalation ... (is that) nobody will win in this. A fire will burn everybody. We should avoid that by all means."

Health Ministry in Local Neighbourhoods ? Parish Nursing Event in ...

Posted by admin on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Last year Thrive Together Birmingham hosted a ?Tackling Poverty? event, offering resources and tools to churches wanting to address issues of poverty in their local neighbourhoods. One of the exhibitors was Parish Nursing UK, a Christian charity which helps local churches appoint nurses to support people and communities towards what they call ?whole person healthcare?, which they describe as care for ?body, mind and spirit?.
Their work is essentially about enabling registered nurses to combine their nursing skills with their faith and work with their local church to address some of?the health needs of the local community. Thrive were keen to get them to Birmingham to inspire nurses to explore possibilities in their neighbourhoods, and on Saturday 22nd September we held an event at Balsall Heath Church Centre. Those attending who were already parish nurses shared their experience and told stories of churches hosting health drop-in?s, where people had their blood pressure checked over a cup of tea and chat, and where time to share and be listened to was prioritised, as well signposting and supporting people to access other health care services. Community breakfasts and lunches focused around highlighting particular health issues.? Cycling projects aimed at developing fitness, encouraging weight loss and encouraging self-esteem. Stories of relationships being built and friendships developing with frail and elderly people who had previously been reluctant to trust others; and of support and reassurance offered to frightened patients and families following difficult diagnoses. The event also offered opportunities for nurses and others attending to ask questions of members of the parish nursing UK team, church leaders and existing parish nurses.

If you are interested in exploring possibilities for using nursing skills in your local neighbourhood and would like more information contact Jennie Fytche at pnmukjenniefytche@btinternet.com

Anti-union Gov. Scott Walker tweets support of unionized NFL refs

    (AP)

Like most Green Bay Packers fans, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker woke up Tuesday morning still stinging from a controversial call?made by the NFL's replacement referees?that cost the team a victory over the Seattle Seahawks on "Monday Night Football."

"After catching a few hours of sleep, the #Packers game is still just as painful," Walker tweeted. "#Returntherealrefs."

The Seahawks' 14-12 victory ended on a Hail Mary pass that was intercepted by Packers safety M.D. Jennings but ruled a touchdown by the replacement refs. The play sparked a firestorm of criticism on Twitter, with players, coaches and fans like Walker all weighing in on the debacle.

But the Republican governor's call for the league to end its dispute with the unionized officials is surprising, considering Walker backed anti-union legislation in the state.

[Related: Seahawks win the strangest game in their history on the call that will define replacement refs]

"His tweet has nothing to do with unions and everything to do with a blown call," Cullen Werwie, Walker's press secretary, wrote in an email to Yahoo News.

    Some Twitter users disagreed.

"So you PRO-union now?" one wrote in response to Walker's tweet. "Here's what hiring low-wage scabs gets you."

"Really!?! You hypocritical FOOL," wrote another. "Your attack on unions gives businesses the ability to hire unqualified employees."

[Also read: The worst call in NFL history?]

The NFL and the officials union are reportedly battling over about $3 million annually in pension commitments, according to Yahoo Sports.

"The replacement ref experiment is a disaster," Yahoo's Dan Wetzel wrote in a column calling on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to issue a public apology. "It has overwhelmed the league. It's overshadowed strong play. It's turned Goodell's vaunted shield into a joke."

All your files are stored on a disk (your hard drive) & problems occur when of half your some program is on one side of that disk and the other half on the other side, this takes time and can wear out your hard drive. By defragging your hard disk rearranges itself so that programs are located next to each other, which allows them to load faster.

    The Prefetch

    Clearing Out Windows

Being smart Windows remembers every program when you open and makes a temporary copy of this program in its 'Prefetch' folder, so when you open it next time, it will load faster.
Now the problem is at times you open a program which you never open again? Quite a few I imagine, so it?s best to keep the Prefetch full of things you use only on a regular basis, this will help at start-up times and general computer performance.

    To reach the Prefetch folder:
    My Computer>Local Disk (C: by default)\ Windows\Prefetch

Select everything in this folder and delete it.

    Removing Viruses & Spyware?

Getting Rid Off Viruses & Spyware

There are numerous numbers of FREE Spyware and Virus programs that do the work, but they are too many mention here. However, as per tests conducted by pc mag ?

The free avast! Free Antivirus 7 and Avira Free Antivirus 2012 actually scored better than Editors' Choice AVG in my malware removal tests, but not in malware blocking. Conversely, ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall and Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 2.0 achieved great scores (9.3 and 9.2) for malware blocking but didn't do as well at cleanup.

If you're evaluating free antivirus tools, all of these are definitely worth consideration.?
