Public speaking for children is a gradual learning process | Public ...

Clich?s bore us to death, so allow us at Public Speaking for Kids to modify slightly. Your child never learnt how to walk in a day. Neither will they learn how to speak amazingly well in public within twenty four hours.

The message for today is build, build, build.

Take it one step at a time and?gradually?help your child climb up the ladder?of skills?required. The slower it is taken the more fun it will be and the more effective their public speaking will become.

Whilst the advice we provide at Public Speaking for Kids is applicable to all children in principle, bear in mind some learn faster than others.

Spend the first few weeks, or maybe even months, fostering an interest in public speaking within your child. Then move on to practicing written pieces in front of immediate family. Once comfortable, widen the audience. Help your child write short speeches and present them to grandparents, uncles and aunties.

Once they are comfortable with this, encourage them to try public speaking in front of their class. At this stage, work with them to develop their impromptu speaking skills.

Once this is embedded, gradually, they will be at the stage to enter competitions or debating clubs.

Mastering public speaking performances is a gradual?process. At times things will go well. However, if your child has a bad experience when delivering a speech, particularly early on,?focus on moving forward and working to improve the next one. Use it as a means of developing your child?s resilience by lovingly encouraging your child to prove themselves next time. Help them to visualise, as early as possible, their future?speeches being received well.

Throughout the ongoing process of developing your child?s public speaking skills, keep a record of their developments, strengths and weaknesses. Use this as?the cement?when laying the bricks of public speaking skills.
