Whether you?re only into games with stunning HD graphics, or strictly prefer the retro look of your dust-covered Super Nintendo cartridges, I think everyone can at least agree that video games have come a long way since the days of?The Legend of Zelda?on the NES. In fact, the NES?Legend of Zelda?was the first console game capable of saving the player's progress, and imagine where we?d be today without that!
But that?s where Evoland, one of the most promising indie titles we?ve seen so far on Steam?s Greenlight program, comes in. Evoland, quite literally, invites you to play through the history of action-adventure video games; because who?s to say which era of games is the best? Evoland is both a testament to the technological strides that game developers have made over the last 20 years, as well as a tribute to the humble roots from where they came. Players will get to experience firsthand how gaming has evolved throughout the years, both in the visuals and fine-tuned game mechanics. The gameplay itself seems to alternate between the real-time action of a Zelda game, before graduating to the turn-based strategy of the Final Fantasy series: with plenty of dungeon crawling, puzzle solving, and even giant tortoise fighting in between.
As you play through Evoland, you?ll begin to unlock new technologies, gameplay systems, and updated graphics. One moment you?ll go from adventuring in Game Boy monochrome pixel graphics, to exploring villages straight out of the Super Nintendo era, to finally the beautifully rendered 3D that looks like it jumped right out of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on the Nintendo DS. Seriously, this game is that cool. Shiro Games absolutely mastered the look and feel of each different period in video game history, and I?m really excited to see if the soundtrack changes along with each milestone shift as well.
If you want to see more of Evoland in the future (and come on, why wouldn?t you?), the game is currently seeking approval on its Steam Greenlight page, and has a hopeful release of early March 2013. The developers also promise tons of surprises and hidden secrets for us to uncover, as well as a few references to other classic and monumental games of old. But despite its clear intentions as a visual timeline of game development, Evoland is sure to have some enthralling adventuring gameplay and a unique story all its own. And visual historical timeline or no visual historical timeline, who doesn?t love a good Zelda-inspired action adventure game?
