A Multi-cultural Event Planned for November 02 Concert

The Cary Town Band presents Yesterdays Remembered, Friday, November 02, 2012, at 7:30 pm in the theater at the Cary Arts Center in downtown Cary, NC. As with all concerts by the band, admission is free with open seating. Incorporating music recalling our recent and not so recent past, the concert features the premier of a multi-cultural ?event? ? a presentation of Don Gillis? ?The Man Who Invented Music?.

This concert by the Cary Town Band has been programmed as the multi-cultural pinnacle of the Fall ?12 season. Opening with more traditional fare, remembering our yesterdays recalls the legend of Robin Hood with Curzon?s ?March of the Bowmen? and the legend of ?The Fountain of Youth?, an overture by Karl King. Another overture contemplates Fate with Verdi?s ?La Forza Del Destino?. The recent tsunami in Japan is remembered by ?A Song for Japan? featuring trombone soloist Yoshi Nakamura. And of course there?s a Leroy Anderson melody in ?The Girl I left Behind Me? and familiar folk melodies in Carter?s ?American Legacy No. 1?. This portion closes by boating on the River Thames to excerpts from Handel?s ?Water Music?.

Post-intermission opens with the premier of an original, multi-cultural production of Don Gillis? ?The Man Who Invented Music? with narration incorporated as a radio play, with actors from the Cary Players and a young actress from Applause! Youth Theater. For the studio audience, the tale is visually realized by an original ballet featuring dancers from the Cary Ballet Company and Petite Ensemble. The concert closes with the area premier of a recent work, Samuel Hazo?s ?Our Yesterdays Lengthen Like Shadows?, the original inspiration for the theme of the entire concert. This remarkable work, structured around a single note that is ever present throughout, is deeply contemplative, recalling the fading shadows of days past. Please join with us as we put it all together for a most memorable evening of music with our Yesterdays Remembered. For more information, visit www.carytownband.org.
