Much Ado About Monuments: WMF Hadrian Award Gala After Party

The scene at Rouge Tomate on appropriately stuffy East 60th Street was the perfect mix of fresh eager ?networky? faces and stuffy old-school cards from central casting. Without a doubt, the most lovely thing about this event was the fact that these two groups actually spoke to each other over generous pours of wine and grass-fed beef sliders.

A prestigious and glamazon-attended black tie affair, the 2012 Hadrian Awards Gala was held this year at the home of everyone?s favorite underage New Yorker, The Plaza Hotel.

Who won awards, after the jump.

This year?s Hadrian Award winner was Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express. American Express was a founding sponsor of the World Monuments Watch in 1996, and reaffirmed its commitment in 2012 by pledging $5 million to the Watch over the next five years.

This year?s Watch List includes sites on all six continents with historic structures other than glaciers, from Argentina to Zimbabwe. Overall, the great state of New York wins out, with four sites on the list:

2) The?New York Studio School (former site of the Whitney Museum) in Manhattan. Photo via Geolocation.

3) Russel Wright?s?Manitoga in Garrison, New York. Photo via WMF.

4) The Orange County Government Center in Goshen, NY. Photo via Bloomberg.

The Duke of Devonshire KCVO, CBE, DL, received the Watch Award, honoring his commitment to preservation, especially his dedicated work at Chatsworth.

Chatsworth, home of the family of the Duke of Devonshire since the 16th century, has been repeatedly selected Britain?s finest stately home (indeed!). Photo via?Chatsworth.

At the after party, younger and more seasoned professionals were abuzz with the excitement of coming together to celebrate the work of WMF. The delicious canap?s and cocktails in an elegant setting certainly added to the joviality of this very respected and respectable celebration.
