Basic Computer Health

The Very Basics

As the famous saying goes "Prevention is better than cure." And this couldn?t be any less true for computers. If you can prevent your computer from becoming cluttered in the first place, it not just only saves yourself time also possibly a headache. So here are a few tips to keep your computer healthy on the while your day to day use:

-Only install programs you need.

-Be aware of how much space your computer has.

-Organise your files! Make sure you don?t have duplicates.

-Empty Your Recycle Bin.

-Clear Your Internet History.

The Disk Defragmentation

Easing Your Computer's Performance

Defragging your computer is the fastest and easiest way to increase your computers performance. To access the Disk Defrag (on XP/Windows 7):

Windows Button + R > ?dfrg.msc? (for Windows XP) or ?dfrgui? (for Windows Vista/7)

Click on the hard disk you want to defrag, and click on the Defragment button. Defragging can take time, but you'll be able to see the progress as the graphical display (in Windows Xp only) of your hard disks state is periodically updated. (IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED YOU DONT TOUCH YOUR COMPUTER DURING DEFRAG PROCESS)

Wait a minute! If you think that it may rearrange files on your computer! DONT WORRY, as Defragging doesn?t move any of your files, even though it sounds like it does. All your files are stored on a disk (your hard drive) & problems occur when of half your some program is on one side of that disk and the other half on the other side, this takes time and can wear out your hard drive. By defragging your hard disk rearranges itself so that programs are located next to each other, which allows them to load faster.

The Prefetch

Clearing Out Windows

Being smart Windows remembers every program when you open and makes a temporary copy of this program in its 'Prefetch' folder, so when you open it next time, it will load faster.
Now the problem is at times you open a program which you never open again? Quite a few I imagine, so it?s best to keep the Prefetch full of things you use only on a regular basis, this will help at start-up times and general computer performance.

To reach the Prefetch folder:
My Computer>Local Disk (C: by default)\ Windows\Prefetch

Select everything in this folder and delete it.

CCleaner

A Simple Program To Help Out

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

Following is screenshot shows my cleaning preferences; these check-ins are based on upon requirements thus you can choose it upon your own,

Application tab next to Windows tab is for Internet & Installed Applications history/cache cleaning

CCleaner is exactly that easy. You can download it for free? Here

By using the Registry, CCleaner will list all your invalid registry and unnecessary files extensions keys, all of which can be deleted. Best thing is, it asks you before deleting any registry key. Clearing vital computer space.
By using the Start-up feature available under Tools, CCleaner displays all the programs told to run on Start-up, msn for example. Here you can easily stop programs you don?t want running on Start-up (when you log on) This is very helpful in speeding up your Start-up times.

If you?re unsure about what programs should be running on Start-up, search for them on this website.

Removing Viruses & Spyware?

Getting Rid Off Viruses & Spyware

There are numerous numbers of FREE Spyware and Virus programs that do the work, but they are too many mention here. However, as per tests conducted by pc mag ?

The free avast! Free Antivirus 7 and Avira Free Antivirus 2012 actually scored better than Editors' Choice AVG in my malware removal tests, but not in malware blocking. Conversely, ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall and Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 2.0 achieved great scores (9.3 and 9.2) for malware blocking but didn't do as well at cleanup.

If you're evaluating free antivirus tools, all of these are definitely worth consideration.?
