Lubbock Christian University welcomed home three alumni Monday as new members of the?school's Board of Trustees with a reception.
LCU President Tim Perrin said the board is diverse, and it?s a coincidence the three new appointees, Melisa Roberts; Tim Leslie; and Dr. Kenneth Stephenson are all LCU alumni and live in Lubbock.
?We are so thankful to our board, full of men and women who are so deeply committed to Lubbock Christian University and to the future and possibilities, not only here in Lubbock and West Texas, but throughout the world.?
Jerry Harris, chairman of the board of trustees, said a committee is appointed to find new members of the board. The?process could take as many as two to three years.
The board?s job is to provide resources the faculty and staff need to carry out the university?s mission to change lives, said Harris, who has served on the board for more than 20 years.
?It?s so important the members of the board of trustees be people who set positive examples,? Harris said.
Roberts said she feels like she?s come a full circle, returning to LCU as a trustee.
She earned her undergraduate degree in accounting from LCU in 1984. She was named homecoming queen and served as a member of Student Senate.
Roberts is the chief lending officer and executive vice president of Lone Star State Bank of West Texas. She serves on the board of the United Way and Lubbock Christian Schools, and as a member of the city of Lubbock Audit Committee.
?I think it?s important to support the community and help people in our community find success,? Roberts said. ?That?s one reason I like working with Lubbock Christian University, because I personally had the opportunity here to find my place in life, and I want to help others do that.?
Leslie said his time at LCU played an important role in his life.
He is a 1980 graduate of Lubbock Christian University. He earned his DDS from the Baylor College of Dentistry. He was a two-time All-American as a Chaparral baseball player in 1978 and 1979 and was inducted into both the LCU Athletic Hall of Honor and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.
Funding will be one of the most difficult challenges the board will face, Leslie said, but it?s also an exciting time as LCU moves to NCAA Division II.
?As a former athlete, I?m looking forward to that, and I think it will be a good change for LCU and students as a whole,? he said.
Leslie is a practicing dentist in Lubbock and a member of the South Plains District Dental Society, the Texas Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the Southwest Restorative and Esthetic Forum.
Stephenson is a 1986 graduate of LCU with a bachelor?s degree in biology. He earned his?medical degree?from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio in 1990.
While at LCU, he was a member of the Chaparral men?s basketball squad and earned Academic All-America honors.
Stephenson said he has a long history with LCU. Four of the five children in his family graduated from the university. He also met his wife there.
?I wouldn?t be where I am today without LCU and many of the people that helped to educate me and support me along the way,? he said. ?I do feel like it?s important to give back.?
He is an orthopedic surgeon and practices at The Center for Orthopedic Surgery in Lubbock. He also is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association and Texas Orthopaedic Association.
