? | Stephen-David asks: i want to start a professional orchestra and was wondering if it is professional for a chamber orchestra to perform in a church. of course i don't little churches i mean major large central churches and maybe catherdals. it could just be i have attached a stigma to performing in churches being unproffesional, because amertuers usually perform in them. i know its hard but tax and that is much easier in the UK it can be set up as a sole trader and i just return 1 tax return. it can't be tax exempt in the uk. | ? |

? | Best answer: Sweetheart, how on earth do you think you could be a sole trader while running an orchestra? If you did manage to set up a pro orchestra you'd have a couple of dozen employees! Not exactly "sole". Pro orchestras can perform anywhere. They are pro if they are paid to do so. | ? |

? | L asks: let's explain better. Im going to graduate high school, would like to do either of these sports, if these sports are available at a college can I participate in them even if I have never practiced the sport. The colleges on which im planning to attend do not specify anything and apparently they are not intramural. My high school does not offer these sports and neither does my town. | ? |

? | Best answer: While I do not have experience with college archery and/or fencing teams, I do have experience with archery and fencing done by college students. If the college(s) you are looking at do(es) not offer archery and/or fencing, you should find out if there is an SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms, Inc.) branch located at/affiliated with the college(s) you are interested in. The SCA, because its main focus is the study and re-creation/re-enactment of the Middle Ages, incorporates archery and fencing into its activities -- and most major colleges (and many community colleges) have an on-campus SCA presence. The good part is that you do not have to join the SCA to take part in the archery/fencing, unless you want to join. I have been involved in archery for more than 30 years, spent ten of those years with SCA archery, and have tried SCA fencing. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that fencing is easy or for "sissies", because it is neither -- and SCA fencing is only slightly more strenuous than Olympic fencing (the main difference is Olympic fencing is limited to back-and-forth; In SCA fencing, you get to move around and use some foot-work). Visit http://sca.org/ and find out if there is a group affiliated with/located at the college of your choice. Then send an e-mail, and ask questions about archery and fencing. | ? |

? | b_hop asks: If a woman is a feminist she is often showered with praises. Such as how she is independent, free thinking, strong and courageous for fighting the patriarchy. But when a man stands up for his gender rights he is seen as oppressive, narrow minded, misogynistic and bitter. Why is there such a double standards in regards to gender rights? | ? |

| | |
? | Best answer: I'm sure the entire answer is quite complex, but basically in many countries they've managed to make feminism politically correct. People accept it without consideration simply because that's what's considered the norm. In some respects that's dying. More people are seeing that lobbying for privileges is different than the stated objective of equality. Far fewer women call themselves feminists now than several years ago. Still, feminism has managed to gain a very strong foot hold by making itself a field of study in most colleges. It's one of the few disciplines that promotes a certain philosophy. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out with time. ~ | ? |

? | Tara asks: I am doing my livingroom Spanish style (not Mexico - Spain). After researching I can only find very few colors they used on the walls. Ocre is mainly outdoor but was also used on the interior and of course Adobe. I just hate having plain white walls so I am hoping to use a brownish color on the walls and whitewash with white. Does anyone have any experience with this? I could use the help I've never done this technique. I also dont know if maybe a different technique would better mimic adobe walls. Thanks ! | ? |

? | Best answer: One thing you might do before painting is to texture the walls so that they look like adobe. You'll need to get a box of drywall mud (comes in a 50 pound box), a stucco brush, a 6-inch spackle knife, a bucket to thin out the mud, and a drywall sanding screen (optional). Also, make sure to get lots of dropcloths, because this is a very messy procedure. Scoop some mud into the bucket and dilute it with water until its the consistency of stirred mayonaise (not so much that it's runny, but enough that you can scoop it up with the stucco brush). Take a brush full of mud and fling it at the wall. It should stick to the wall and not run down the wall. If it's too runny, scrape it off with the spackle knife, put it back into the bucket, and add more mud to thicken it. Fling the mud at the wall to cover it, but not completely. The mud will be the high points of the texture and where there is no mud will be the low point. When the wall is covered, let it sit and dry for about 15 minutes. Lightly drag the spackle knife across the blobs of mud to flatten them. Go in different directions in different areas of the wall so as not to create a definite pattern. When you're done, let it dry for a couple of days. After it's dry, you can lightly sand it with a drywall sanding screen to smooth out rough edges or just leave it rough. If you sand it, brush it off with a soft broom to remove the dust. Prime and paint. It's really a lot easier than it sounds, once you get the hang of how to do the splattering of mud and the knockdown (flattening) technique. And, it really gives a great adobe-like texture. | ? |
