Weather service: Peru tornado traveled 3.5 miles

PERU, Indiana ? A tornado that hit Peru traveled 3? miles across the northern Indiana city's southern outskirts.

The National Weather Service confirmed the EF-1 tornado Thursday and said it had estimated maximum wind speeds of 95 mph.

The weather service says the tornado formed early Wednesday afternoon as several clusters of thunderstorms formed across northern Indiana and northwestern Ohio. It says straight-line winds in the area reached as high as 80 mph.

Authorities said the tornado damaged several buildings including two grocery stores and a medical center. Two people suffered minor injuries.

Peru is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Wayne.
