Peter MacKay and Nazanin Afshin-Jam wedding photo released

Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Nazanin Afshin-Jam were all smiles as the newlyweds left the oceanside Mexican chapel where they were married last week.

The beaming couple were captured in a wedding photograph that MacKay posted Saturday morning on his Facebook profile, following Wednesday's nuptials.

A former Miss World Canada, Afshin-Jam was dazzling in a sleek white gown with touches of lace and simple pearl jewelry. The bride had an air of old Hollywood glamour with her hair in a loose updo, complete with a long flowing veil.

MacKay complemented his bride with a sharp black tuxedo and crisp white-collared shirt, with a black tie and white pocket square.

As they descended the chapel stairs, close friends and family showered the couple with white rose petals.

The couple is now enjoying a honeymoon.

In an earlier interview with his local newspaper The New Glasgow News in Nova Scotia, MacKay said they were married by their reverend, Glen Matheson.

The ceremony took place "in a beautiful, quaint, traditional hillside chapel overlooking the ocean," MacKay said.

"We both wanted a very personal and family oriented ceremony in a location that was easily accessible to both of our families," MacKay said, in explaining the decision to marry in Mexico.

MacKay said he met Afshin-Jam when he was foreign affairs minister. A human-rights activist, Afshin-Jam was working to save children on death row in Iran.

Their relationship remained professional until later in 2010 when they started dating.

"I was impressed by her intelligence and commitment to help others," he said. "She is a very caring and compassionate person. I came to admire her kind heart and the fact that she loves children and animals."

Born in Iran, Afshin-Jam was once named one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. She became Miss World Canada and runner-up Miss World in 2003.
