Car Audio Help???
I wanted to put some subs in my car but really not sure what I should go with. I've been thinking about the sub that is below in the link. I'm pretty sure I want two subs. I'm looking to spend anywhere from $150-$200 on just the subs. Any suggestions?
Here is the link for the sub I was looking at:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=295-204Numbers suggest it'll work well in about 2 ft3 ported and one of the reviews said it worked great for his auto install. Best to run the numbers through WinISD or Unibox to see how it'll perform in your box volume needs. I wouldn't use anything less than a 4" diameter port, though. Sealed could work well, too, but I haven't run it through Unibox or WinISD to see.

Would you reccommend this sub or some different ones that are in my budget? -

Its a 2002 honda civic and I would be putting them in trunk of the car. As far as space goes there is definitely enough space for two 12inch subs. -
Re: Car Audio Help???
Way too many details missing.
1) Type of car
2) Amplifier
3) location of sub
4) Listening habitsIt's a little more than just plucking a raw driver from PE's site. Fill in the blanks and we'll figure out an appropriate enclusure and run the sim with an amplifier in mind.

Its a 2002 honda civic. The subs will be going in the trunk of the car. I listen to a lot of rap and hip hop so it has a lot of bass. I havent gotten an amplifier yet but I was thinking about an 1000 watt kenwood amplifier. -
Re: Car Audio Help???
You have about 13ft^3 room in the trunk but the opening is rather small, meaning that it might be a challenge to fit a large dual sub ported box in the trunk. My son has a similar predicament with his Civic. Even with 2x Kicker 10" Solo-Baric L7's, the box just barely fits thru the trunk opening. Once it's muscled in, it's fine.
Does your back seat fold completely down, allowing to fit a large box in that way? Just figuring out how large we can go with the enclosure.

Re: Car Audio Help???
Do you have a head unit that has RCA low level out for the sub? Aluna54 asked some great questions.
IMO, unless you are really want hot loud bass, you really don't need to go bigger then a 10" You don't really need low bass in a car like you do in home audio. A lot of the low end stuff gets lost to road, engine, wind noise anyway.
Are you wanting to rattle your trunk going down the road, or do you want bass to cover the low end to your music and actually sound good?

Re: Car Audio Help???
The DCS305-4 is pretty versatile.
You could use it sealed in a small box or ported in a much larger box. The tradeoff is SPL. The sealed alignment will play much lower than a larger vented alignment. Here?s a comparison.
Let?s assume you have 500 watts RMS power and the box is made with 0.75? MDF.
14x14x13 sealed box ? F3 at 45Hz, MAX SPL = 114db
14x30x14 ported box ? 6? I.D. x 11? port - Fb=45Hz ? F3 at 45Hz ? MAX SPL= 123dbSo you can see there?s a considerable difference in ?LOUDNESS? with the different designs. That?s a good sub?definitely a contender. I?d use just one with a good amplifier and a ported box to extract the most out of the driver. Keep in mind that the specs on amplifiers vary wildly. A 1000w spec doesn?t mean it?s a real, pure 1000 watts in real life. Your amplifier choice is equally as important as your subwoofer choice.

Re: Car Audio Help???
So a trunk, not a hatchback. It would be great if the back seats folded down.
Don't buy nothin' yet. There are some very learned folks here and with lots of experience as to what is over rated junk and what is worth the money.
I will assume you want it to be loud and low enough for hip hop and rap.
What is your budget for woofers and amplifier? This will determine much of what can be recommended.

Impossible. No one could possibly be stupid enough to build a sub woofer enclosure too big to fit thru the trunk opening.....in say an '85 Jetta.....like maybe a 6cuft bandpass enclosure.... -

Yes the back seats fold down completely but I dont think I would want to have them down all the time. -

I wasn?t suggesting that you do that. It might be easier for you to build a sub box and then slide it in thru that (back seat) opening as opposed to sticking the box in thru the regular trunk opening. You might have a decent amount of cargo area in the trunk, but the ?trunk opening? on Civic coupes/sedans is generally small, making it difficult to utilize a large sub box sometimes. -

Oh ok. Bryan, what do you think of the sub that I'm thinking about getting? -

Ok. So I've heard of three different kinds of boxes so far which are sealed, ported and bandpass. What is the difference between these three? Which kind of box would you reccommend for two of the subwoofers that I posted the link for? -

Re: Car Audio Help???
I can only SIM sealed, ported and passive radiator alignments with the tools that I have.
For your amount of space, using two of those Dayton subs would require you to go sealed, in order to bring the box size down so it fits in your trunk.
You ?could? build a ported box for 2 of those subs, but in order to extract the most out of the drivers, the box would have to be considerably larger ? larger than can fit in your trunk. Also, if you wire 2 of those subs in parallel, you drop the ohm load down just below 2ohms, so you better make sure you have an amp that matches.

Re: Car Audio Help???
Sure...listen, there's 100 ways to skin this cat. The Dayton sub will work for you, but there are probably 20 more that will work "similarly" for around the same cost....some a little better, some a little worse. There are more subs out there that will work considerably better for more $$$ and a whole bunch of crappy subs out there that are not worth anyone's time, much less their hard-earned $$$.
You're leaving so much out of the ultimate equation that it's difficult to help. You need to figure out your TOTAL budget and then take it from there. If you've not wired your car for a trunk amp/sub setup, you have to factor that into your budget as well. Proper power wiring from your battery is a MUST. Think at least 4awg from your battery to your trunk and then proper grounding block with same gauge wiring. You also need to run high-quality low-level RCA cabling from your head unit to your trunk. When you do this, make sure you run those signal cables on the opposite side of your car to reduce any noise. A good amp is a MUST. All of this extra stuff will set you back some significant coin.
When you add all this crap up, and realize that it?s costing a lot more than you originally thought, you might skimp on something to save some $$$. Don?t do it. You will be disappointed. Best thing to do is figure out exactly how much you?re willing to spend on the entire sub setup and then guys around here can help you maximize your value.
