?One World, Two Internets? is how long-time China media analyst Bill Bishop describes China?s position in the online world.??Encouraging consumers to ?like us on Facebook? may be common practice for companies around the world, but not in China, where Facebook is blocked and still has minimal penetration.??When it comes to marketing via social media in China, Western companies find that it?s a whole different world.

Attending a conference in Silicon Valley, I heard one speaker say: ?In China they have no Facebook, no Twitter, no YouTube, no Google; they know almost nothing about the Internet!???Wrong. They have Weibo and WeChat and Youku and Baidu, and more.??Each of these has hundreds of millions of users and is a household name across China.??China?s online community is incredibly vibrant, technologically advanced and increasingly global in scope; it?s just that they play their own game.? In fact, China has the world?s most active social media environment, with over 300 million users.? China?s netizens on average spend 40% of their time at social media sites, a much higher percentage than in the West.

For companies looking to market themselves in China through social media, setting up a Facebook page, a Twitter feed or a YouTube channel will get you nowhere.??Waiting for sites to become unblocked may well take longer than the entire history of these companies to date.??Hoping that Chinese consumers will use readily-available tools to reach blocked sites is futile ? the vast majority simply don?t bother to even try.??You have to learn how to navigate ?China?s Internet.?

King of the hill in China?s social media scene at present is Weibo, often erroneously described as ?China?s Twitter?.? While Weibo clearly began as a Twitter clone, like many Chinese Internet start-ups it quickly evolved into something more, adapting to its own environment and user preferences. These days, Weibo is much more versatile and offers more functionality than Twitter, and continues to release new features on a steady basis.

Moving beyond the ?square peg in a round hole? approach of describing Chinese web services as ?the Chinese version of?? is an important step towards understanding China?s Internet.? There really is no ?Chinese Facebook?, because the industry is much more fragmented in China, and no one site has the power or influence of a Facebook.? Beyond Weibo, popular sites like Renren and Kaixin offer much of the social networking services of Facebook, but each with their own niche.? The inability of any one player to become truly dominant has forced sites to differentiate themselves and focus more on specific market segments.? Perhaps as a result, over 80% of social media users in China subscribe to multiple sites ? again a much higher average than in Western countries

Even Weibo (which literally means ?micro-blog?) is fragmented.? Among white-collar users in first tier cities and among a large contingent of overseas Chinese, ?Weibo? refers to Sina Weibo.? But ask grassroots users in second and third tier cities which micro-blogs they follow and the answer is usually Tencent Weibo. ?And then there?s WeChat, already threatening to eclipse Weibo and become China?s first truly global Internet product.

If all this seems confusing, it?s because it is. China?s social media scene is a messy, diverse and rapidly evolving environment. ?Yet this is the main online forum where people are exchanging information and forming opinions. ?It?s no longer sufficient to simply have a Chinese language website and wait for people to visit.?To be effective, you have to pick your online venues based on your target audience and manage your exposure across social media platforms.

For my part, I currently maintain micro-blogs on both Sina and Tencent. And while information is often cross-posted, I find there is little overlap between the roughly 2 million followers on either site.

Accumulating vast hordes of zombie followers does little more than boost one?s ego, however. What?s more important is being involved and helping shape opinions within this very active forum.??More impact tends to come from being re-posted and thus reaching new users, or simply raising a topic and watching the ensuing discussion take on a life of its own.??You don?t have to say everything for yourself, because others will fill in the blanks. ?You?re only?one voice in a multi-nodal conversation, and what?s more important is not what you or anyone else says specifically, but the general tone?of the online discussion and the fact that a discussion is taking place at all.

Keep it down-to-earth and as personalized as possible, but grow a thick skin.??This is not a place to simply be issuing press releases and impersonal, standardized notices. And be prepared for the strong anti-commercial, anti-authoritarian, anti-just-about-everything streak of social media. ?Much of the commentary on Weibo and other social media can be discouraging, but the overall impact is well worthwhile.

Increasingly I am finding that media inquiries, performing and business opportunities are coming out of the buzz created on Weibo.? Even for serious business enquiries, people are much more likely reach out with a first message via Weibo than to use the traditional ?Contact Us? page on my website. ?And traditional media outlets are increasingly referring to social media sites for story ideas, so momentum gained on Weibo often continues to grow through print, radio and television.

Of course, social media is a natural forum for public figures, but corporations and other organizations are also increasingly using the medium to communicate directly with their customers, users, or simply a broader public audience. ?We all face the same challenge of how to reach out to ordinary Chinese citizens with as few barriers and filters as possible.? Actively participating in the domestic social media scene in China provides the most direct way to do that.

If you?re truly interested in engaging your Chinese customers/users/audience in a real conversation via social media, invite yourself onto their turf and join in the discussions that are happening on ?China?s Internet.?

US border security advocates eye remote lands

NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) ? When Dan Bell drives through his 35,000-acre cattle ranch, he speaks of the hurdles that the Border Patrol faces in his rolling green hills of oak and mesquite trees ? the hours it takes to drive to some places, the wilderness areas that are generally off-limits to motorized vehicles, the environmental reviews required to extend a dirt road.

John Ladd offers a different take from his 14,000-acre spread: the Border Patrol already has more than enough roads and its beefed-up presence has flooded his land and eroded the soil.

Their differences explain why ranchers are on opposite sides of the fence over a sweeping proposal to waive environmental reviews on federal lands within 100 miles of Mexico and Canada for the sake of border security. The Border Patrol would have a free hand to build roads, camera towers, helicopter pads and living quarters without any of the outside scrutiny that can modify or even derail plans to extend its footprint.

The U.S. House approved the bill authored by Utah Republican Rob Bishop in June, but prospects in the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate are extremely slim and chances of President Barack Obama's signature even slimmer. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano testified in Congress this year that the bill was unnecessary and "bad policy."

Still, an idea that House Republicans kicked around for years has advanced farther in the legislative process than ever before and rekindled discussion over how to balance border security with wildlife protection.

The debate raises some of the same questions that will play out on a larger scale when Congress and the president tackle immigration reform: Is the U.S. border with Mexico secure, considered by some lawmakers to be a litmus test for granting legal residency and citizenship to millions? Has the U.S. reached a point of border security overkill?

Heightened enforcement ? along with a fewer available jobs in the U.S. and an aging population in Mexico ? has brought Border Patrol arrests to 40-year lows.

The U.S. has erected 650 miles of fences and other barriers on the Mexican border, almost all of it after a 2005 law gave the Homeland Security secretary power to waive environmental reviews. The administration of President George W. Bush exercised its waiver authority on hundreds of miles after years of court challenges and environmental reviews delayed construction on a 14-mile stretch in San Diego.

The Border Patrol, which has doubled to more than 21,000 agents since 2004, has also built 12 "forward operating bases" to increase its presence in remote areas. Instead of driving long distances from their stations every shift, agents stay at the camps for several days.

Lots more needs to be done, according to backers of Bishop's bill to rewrite rules on millions of acres of federal land managed by the Interior and Agriculture departments, including more than 800 miles bordering Mexico and 1,000 miles bordering Canada. The bill would waive reviews required under the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act and 14 other laws in dozens of wilderness areas, national forests and national parks.

"It's a paralyzing process now," Bell, 44, said as his GMC truck barreled down a dirt road on a 10-mile stretch of his ranch that borders Mexico. "They wanted to put this road in for a decade, probably even longer. They broke ground on it last year."

Bell, a burly, third-generation rancher who leases his land from the Agriculture Department, acknowledges there are noticeably fewer border crossers since the government built a fence on the eastern part of his ranch, near Nogales. In the ranch's west end, the Border Patrol opened one of its camps in 2005 ? a collection of shipping containers that agents use as a base while alternating 12-hour shifts.

Yet migrants continue crossing in some rugged reaches that are well outside of cellphone range. Bell says waiving environmental reviews within 100 miles of the border may be unnecessary but that a 25-mile zone would help immensely.

"There are areas where the agents can't get to," he said. "By the time they get out of the station and get to these remote areas, then hike another two or three hours just to get close to the border, they have to come back because their day is pretty much eaten up. It's really difficult when there's no access out there."

Ladd, a fourth-generation rancher whose spread near Douglas is in a flatter, more easily traveled area of mesquite-draped hills, thinks the Border Patrol has gone far enough. The agency installed four 80-foot camera towers on his land about six years ago. In 2007, it completed a fence along the 10.5 miles of his ranch that borders Mexico.

Rainfall that runs downhill from Mexico is stopped by debris caught in the mesh fence and an adjoining raised road, Ladd says. The water is diverted to other areas, causing floods and soil erosion on his property.

Ladd, 57, thinks the bill would allow the Border Patrol to "run roughshod" over ranches and farms.

"Be careful what you wish for, they're going to tear it up," Ladd tells other ranchers. "Once they get in, it pretty well turns into a parking lot. It's really hard to get them out."

Ladd says the 37 miles of roads on his ranch are enough for the Border Patrol's needs. "Why do you need new ones?" he asks.

The Interior Department raised concerns in a survey of Arizona's Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge last year that found nearly 8,000 miles of off-road vehicle trails, blaming much of it on smuggling and Border Patrol activity. It urged the Border Patrol to rely tools like radars and cameras, which are less threatening to wildlife.

Critics of the Border Patrol's growth have long called new fences, roads and other infrastructure a threat to Sonoran pronghorn, Mexican grey wolves, jaguars and other border wildlife.

A Government Accountability Office report in 2010 offered fodder for both sides of the debate. It found Border Patrol supervisors generally felt land laws didn't hinder them on the job but that the agency sometimes encountered roadblocks. An unnamed agency took four months to review a Border Patrol request to move a camera tower in Arizona, by which time traffic had moved to another area.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, an Arizona Democrat who has led opposition to the bill that has largely split along party lines, calls the effort a disguised step toward repealing environmental laws.

"The border has become a very convenient excuse to after laws that have been on the books for four or five decades," he said. "You plant your flag on the 100 miles (of border) and then build from there."

Bishop dismisses that criticism as a scare tactic and a "lousy argument."

"Sovereign countries control their borders. Anything that stops us from that is a violation of why we are a nation," he said.

Year in movies: Time to punch a wolf

Familiar faces, many celebrating major milestones, dominated the year in movies. James Bond turned 50 with a huge hit in "Skyfall," Marvel's "Avengers" finally assembled on the big screen, and the "Twilight" franchise finally bowed out -- just in time for "The Hunger Games" to move in and set up camp.

Lionsgate, MGM, New Line, Summit

"The Hunger Games," "Skyfall," "Breaking Dawn Part 2" and "The Hobbit" were among the big films this year.

Here are some of the highlights -- and lowlights -- of the year in film. (Warning: Spoilers ahoy!)

JANUARY
'The Grey'
Liam Neeson punches a wolf in the face! Or not, but the trailer made it seem like he did, resulting in a great Internet meme. ?Also, who wouldn't buy this film's upbeat soundtrack, which includes such peppy numbers as "You Are Gonna Die," "Wife Memory" and "Running From Wolves"?

'The Devil Inside'
Plus side: This exorcism movie was a huge box-office success! Down side: It was horrible! Plus side: Slate suggested the film has the "worst ending of all time"! (Viewers are told to go to a website.) Down side: You've now got that INXS song stuck in your head, don't you? Every single one of us, the devil inside.

FEBRUARY
'Woman in Black'
Spooky setting, but the Daniel Radcliffe-starring horror film critics dubbed "Scary Potter" was all trick and no treat.?

'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" in 3-D
We didn't even enjoy this one in regular D.?

'Secret World of Arrietty'
Finally, a sweet Valentine's Day treat. Kids and parents alike were enchanted by this little-seen Japanese animated film (dubbed in English, by Carol Burnett among others) based on the beloved "Borrowers" books.?

MARCH
'Dr. Seuss' The Lorax'
He is the Lorax, he speaks for the trees. This adaptation of the good doctor's book earned mixed reviews, but Ed Helms stood out as the tree-chopping, finally redeemed Once-ler.?

'John Carter'
Let's suppose it's a good idea to spend a quarter of a billion dollars on a movie. Don't make it this movie. ?"Will you stay and fight for Helium?" is one line. Uh, no, we're gonna go see if Hydrogen has anything better to offer.

'21 Jump Street'
No one had high hopes for "21 Jump Street," a big-screen version of the 1980s TV show about baby-face cops. But then stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, and a witty and raunchy script shook things up, resulting in a hilarious, fast-moving comedy that paid all the proper homage to its retro forebears without groveling.?

'The Hunger Games'
Yes, another huge-selling book series becomes a movie series. But somehow -- maybe due to the lack of vampires -- "The Hunger Games" was taken a lot more seriously than "Twilight." Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) made archery look cool, and fans from all Districts can't wait for the next three movies.

APRIL
'Titanic 3-D'
Spoiler: The boat sinks. Again.

'Cabin in the Woods'
This is not your grandfather's horror movie. Witty and sharp, "Cabin" picks up the entire slasher-film genre upside-down, screams in its face and drives it round the bend.?

'Lockout'
The movie many dubbed "Escape From Space Prison" would have been much better if it had Snake Plissken. Guy Pearce is no Kurt Russell.

MAY
'The Avengers'
Marvel's superhero group deserved a great big-screen debut, and they got it. Best line: When team leader Captain America finishes handing out complicated instructions to his team members, then simply turns to the big green guy and says, "Hulk. Smash."?

'Dark Shadows'
Barnabas Collins was many a 1970s girl's first heartthrob, and "Dark Shadows" fans eagerly awaited this movie version of the vampire soap opera. But Johnny Depp, who'd long announced that he was a big fan of the show and character, let everyone down by turning the beloved title into a groaningly bad parody with maybe one funny line. ("Reveal yourself, tiny songstress," Depp's Barnabas demands of a TV displaying Karen Carpenter singing.)

'The Dictator'
There was sure a lot of fuss about "The Dictator" before it came out, with star Sacha Baron Cohen insisting on wearing his "Dictator" costume to the Oscars and dumping fake Kim Jong-Il ashes on Ryan Seacrest. Too bad that when the movie came out, it was so unfunny as to be quickly forgotten.?

'Battleship'
Yes, the idea of a movie based on the popular board game is goofy, but entertain yourself ticking off the specific game references. The aliens shoot pegs at each other! Strikes are plotted on a computer with the traditional "E-11!" wording familiar from the game! Bring on the sure-to-be-Oscar-candidate "Hungry, Hungry Hippos"!

JUNE
'Snow White and the Huntsman'
Will forever be known as "that movie where Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson with the director." Guess he thought she was the fairest of them all.

'Prometheus'
After all the fuss about whether this was or wasn't an "Alien" prequel ... they should've just gone ahead and made an "Alien" prequel.?

'That's My Boy'
Pedophilia, incest and?statutory?rape! Adam Sandler has come a long way from the sweet innocence of "The Wedding Singer," and we wish he'd go back there, pronto. One of the worst-reviewed films of the year.?

'Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter'
Eagerly awaiting the sequels. "Millard Fillmore: Mummy Wrangler" and "James K. Polk: Loch Ness Monster Spotter."?

'Brave'
It's not Pixar's best, but this latest animated film does present a fiery-haired princess who's not your mother's Cinderella.

'Magic Mike'
Now brides-to-be and bachelorettes who are too shy to go out to Chippendales have the perfect movie to rent for their parties. ?Matthew McConaughey's star-spangled stripper costume will ensure you never look at Uncle Sam the same way again.

JULY
'Amazing Spider-Man'
A sparkling reboot for the webslinger, with "Social Network" star Andrew Garfield (and Emma Stone as girlfriend Gwen Stacy) giving the beloved character a fresh feel.?

'Dark Knight Rises'
It'll now forever be associated with the horrific shooting in Aurora, Colo., but the film painted a dazzling end to Christopher Nolan's Caped Crusader trilogy. And holy sidekicks, Batman, was that really Robin??

AUGUST
'Total Recall'
Colin Farrell's great and all, but you can't replace Arnold Schwarzenegger in an action movie. No one do this going forward. But kudos for the return of the three-breasted hooker.?

'The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure'
You never heard of this kids' movie. No one ever heard of this kids' movie. That's why it became the biggest box-office bomb of all time for films released in 2,000+ theaters. Cost: $60 million if you include marketing. Made: $1 million. That's not a typo.?

SEPTEMBER
'Hotel Transylvania'
Adam Sandler slightly redeems himself (slightly) for "That's My Boy" by providing the voice of a loyal dad vampire who runs a hotel for monsters and doesn't want his batty daughter dating a human.?

'Looper'
It's no "Inception," but Joseph Gordon-Levitt's September sci-fi flick gave moviegoers that same shaky sense of weirdness, introducing them to a universe where time travel is real, yet used only by future mobsters, with creepy implications.?

OCTOBER
'Taken 2'
There are no wolves, but Liam Neeson is still Mister Not To Be Messed With.?

'Argo'
Thought you knew all about the Iranian hostage crisis? You didn't know about this Iranian hostage crisis. Wonderfully worth seeing, 1970s hair and all.?

NOVEMBER
'Wreck-It Ralph'
What happens to your favorite video-game characters after the arcade shuts down for the night? Turns out they have a whole slammin' lifestyle, fighting Cybugs and having candy go-kart races, and in the end, a new hero is made.

'Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2'
Apparently the second half of Stephenie Meyer's book wasn't bloody enough, so the film introduces a whole new sequence that ... well, let's just say we hope you didn't get too attached to some of your favorite characters from Films 1-4. What's that in the field ahead? Er, we mean, "what's that in the field? A head?"

'Skyfall'
James Bond is back, celebrating 50 years of the spy franchise in what might be the most purely enjoyable blockbuster of the year. Q, M and other letters of the alphabet play major roles.

'Lincoln'
Turns out our beloved sixteenth president didn't actually fight vampires, instead he fought an intense backroom battle to pass the amendment banning slavery. And also told some great folksy stories. And made one fateful trip to the theater.?

DECEMBER
'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'
The first of three Peter Jackson films breaking down J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved book takes a while to get started, but once the dwarves are done with their burping contests and have broken most of Bilbo's mother's china, the quest begins. Mountain trolls and goblins and orcs, oh my!?

'Django Unchained'
Quentin Tarantino's back, with all the witty dialogue, artfully flowing blood and controversy that ensues. Jamie Foxx plays a slave-turned-bounty-hunter who teams up with the wonderful Christoph Waltz to make the best unlikely duo of the year.

'Les Miserables'
Do you hear the people sing??Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne bring the famed Broadway musical to your local mall.?Even if you can't pronounce it, even if all you know of the music is that Susan Boyle sang one song and George Costanza another, "Les Mis" is a nearly three-hour trip worth taking.?

Short-Lived Samsung Webpage Reveals Galaxy Camera Coming to Verizon

After receiving much press coverage for its groundbreaking fusion of camera and smartphone, Samsung?s $500 Galaxy Camera finally hit store shelves in the middle of last month ? AT&T store shelves.

Although the launch was done exclusively through what?s considered to be the worst US carrier, it appears that Samsung will soon be branching out to additional providers. Verizon customers are reportedly next in line for the unique smartcamera.

The Verge reports that earlier today, Samsung published a product page for a ?Verizon 4G LTE Connected? version of the camera (seen in the screenshot above). Although the page was quickly taken down, the cat had already been let out of the bag.

A comparison of the AT&T and Verizon model spec sheets reveals that the two cameras will largely be the same. One difference may be in the networking capabilities of the upcoming camera. The Verizon model appears to only have 700 MHz compatibility, which may be a hindrance to owners who?d like to use it abroad.
